Study: Settop Box Shipments to Grow 4.2% in 2009
iSuppli says settop box shipments will reach 136.7 million units in 2009 and 200 million units by 2013.
Global shipments of settop boxes (STBs) are expected to grow 4.2 percent in 2009 to 136.7 million units, according to iSuppli, up from 131.2 million in 2008.
Due to rising demand for products supporting HD, DVRs, and IPTV, iSuppli also says shipments will rise to nearly 200 million units by 2013.
iSuppli says STB sales surged during the worst phase of the economic downturn.
"In the fourth quarter (of 2008), when the wheels were literally coming off of the world's economies, the leading STB makers were reporting surging sales," says Jordan Selburn, principal analyst for semiconductor design and STBs at iSuppli. "This phenomenon carried over into 2009 and beyond with first-quarter shipments of STBs."
According to iSuppli, terrestrial and satellite STB shipments were flat during this period, while cable boxes showed strong growth. IPTV STBs shipped over 50 percent more systems than in 2008.
"Premium boxes, like DVR-enabled STBs and HD products, will grow at a substantially higher rate than the 4.2 percent level for the overall STB market in 2009," Selburn says. "These STBs will buoy the entire market as non-DRV and standard-definition from this point forward."
Shipments of premium boxes in 2008 almost doubled to 22.4 million systems. A 28% rise is anticipated in 2009.
