Study: Yearly LCD Shipments Drop for First Time Ever
LCD shipments drop 2% to 8.7M units, while plasmas increase 10% to 1.3M units.
TV shipments in North America fell 7 percent to 10.7 million units in Q4, according to preliminary results from DisplaySearch.
LCDs fell year-to-year (Y/Y) for the first time ever, dropping 2 percent from 8.9 million units in Q4 2007 to 8.7 million in Q4 2008. LCD shipments did increase 9 percent quarter-to-quarter (Q/Q).
Plasma shipments increased 28 percent Q/Q and 10 percent Y/Y to 1.3 million, a new quarterly record. Should be interesting to watch the plasma numbers the next few quarters with Pioneer and Vizio both leaving the business.
Samsung has the top flat-panel unit share for the sixth straight quarter at more than 20 percent for the first time. It ranks No. 1 and No. 2 in LCDs and plasmas, respectively.
Sony is second in unit share at 14.2 percent, which marks a 3-point gain from Q3 2008 on 29 percent Q/Q growth. The company's Q4 2008 LCD share was 16.3 percent, its highest in the past three years.
Vizio was third in unit share with increases from 9 percent to 12.3 percent, the biggest gain among the top five brands. Vizio ranked third in both LCDs and plasmas.
