Quixel Research reports that sales of large-screen LCD TVs surpassed that of large-screen plasmas (PDPs) for the first time ever in Q1 2009.
"USA Large Area Display Report" finds that LCD volume in the 55-plus-inch market grew 137 percent quarter-to-quarter (Q/Q) and almost 500 percent year-to-year, while PDP volume was flat.
Global TV revenues fell 12 percent year-over-year in the first quarter of 2009 to $22.1 billion, with total shipments down 6 percent to 43.3 million units, according to DisplaySearch.
Revenue for LCD and plasma markets (55-plus-inch market):
- LCD revenue grew 55 percent Q/Q and nearly 200 percent Y/Y
- PDP revenues dropped 12 percent Q/Q and 20 percent Y/Y
"The proverbial 'other shoe' is about to drop for the PDP category," says Tamaryn Pratt, Quixel Research's principal. "LCD TV manufacturers have long prognosticated that they would overtake even the larger sized PDP segments. With the new LCD TV 55-inch model entries in the first quarter and increased 65-inch LCD TV sales on the horizon, we are about to see the LCD TV category further commandeer large screen turf from both PDP and MDRP TV."
Overall revenue for the large-screen display market fell to $4.1 billion from $5.3 billion in Q4 2008, marking a 24 percent decline. Shipments were down 22 percent overall for the market, with LCDs accounting for 78 percent of the total market of 40-plus-inch TVs.
PDP unit sales were down 48 percent Q/Q and 13 percent Y/Y. Sales of 58-inch plasmas, however, increased 15 percent Q/Q.
