Study: Home Automation System Shipments to Hit 2.8M in 2011
ABI Research says luxury systems will be only home automation segment severely impacted by recession.
Shipments of home automation systems are expected to reach nearly 2.8 million in 2011, according to a new study by ABI Research.
The research firm says luxury systems will be the only home automation segment "significantly impacted" by the recession.
"The luxury home automation market for systems costing more than $50,000 is relatively mature, so it will feel the greatest impact from the recession," says senior analyst Sam Lucero.
According to ABI, standards-based home automation, home automation as a service and DIY home automation are too new and should expand rapidly starting in 2010.
Also, standardized wireless technologies such as ZigBee and Z-Wave have caused many mainstream home automation installations to fall into the $10,000-$15,000 price range, which will spur growth, ABI says.
ABI Research recently said the number of home automation systems will reach 4 million by 2013, adding that the market will then be more than 50 times its current size. There were 237,000 systems shipped in 2007.
