Sony, Toshiba to Outsource More LCD TVs
Toshiba to outsource more than 20 percent of its LCDs, Sony more than 3 million.
Sony and Toshiba are increasing the amount of LCD TVs outsourced to manufacturers in Taiwan, according to the Nikkei business daily.
Sony, which outsourced 500,000 LCDs to Taiwanese manufacturers last year, will outsource more than three million LCDs to Hon Hai Precision, the world's largest contract maker of electronics, in the fiscal year that ends March 31, 2009, according to the report.
Toshiba is outsourcing more than 20 percent of its LCDs to Compal Electronics. The Nikkei business daily says this is a "cost-cutting" move by both companies.
Both Sony and Toshiba will continue to make LCD TVs at their own factories. They hope to meet increasing demand through these Taiwanese electronics manufacturing services (EMS).
Sony said in May it wants to sell 17 million LCDs in fiscal 2008, up from 10.6 million last year.
Quixel Research says LCD sales increased 25 percent in Q2.
Sony is the second largest LCD manufacturer in the world, according to DisplaySearch.
LG also recently cut its LCD production by 10 percent, as manufacturers were slashing the prices of HDTVs by $400.
