Sling & Dish Network Do Combo HD DVR
The new ViP 922 includes 1TB of space, a touchpad remote, and integrated Slingbox.
Dish will start offering the ViP 922 this spring.
Ever since EchoStar bought Sling Media back in 2007, we’ve been waiting for something extra special on the set-top front. Today, we’ve got it.
Dish Network just announced a joint effort with Sling for the first SlingLoaded HD DuoDVR. Also known as the ViP 922, the box has 1TB of storage and can tap into five video sources, including satellite, broadband and optional over-the-air tuners.
Of course, the crown jewel is Slingbox service, which allows users to watch any channel on their local lineup, as well as DVR content, from any computer or cell phone with web access.
Other features include the ability to search and organize channels by name or number; the ability to load photos, MP3s and web content; Internet-delivered DISH On Demand (including 1080p content); and news feeds for weather, sports and other news. The unit can connect via Ethernet, HomePlug Turbo, or Wi-Fi (with an optional adapter).
A touchpad remote comes with the ViP 922, which provides “cursor-like navigation” right on the TV screen. You can also control the unit via SlingGuide over the Internet.
Future upgrades will include photo sharing, movie ticket purchases, IM, streaming audio, calendars, and other options for the home network. Dish Network will start offering ViP 922 this spring.
