Sharp Unveils Solar-Powered LCD

LCD is powered by a separate solar panel and uses half the energy of other LCDs.

Sharp has developed a 26-inch solar-powered LCD that has a 10,000:1 contrast ratio.

The prototype LCD, being shown at the G8 Summit in Hokkaido, Japan, uses about one-quarter the power and one-half the energy of an average LCD TV. (via Crave Asia)

There have been questions as to how environmentally-friendly LCDs are. A recent report published in Geophysical Research Letters says LCDs may be contributing to global warming.

Sharp says the unit was designed specifically for nations where the nearest AC mains is probably a town away.

The LCD is powered by a separate 26-inch solar panel. Sharp says it will try to market the LCD and the solar panel together.

Sharp hasn't said a peep about pricing or availability. We'll have to wait and see if this prototype actually hits the market.
