The battle for the thinnest TV at CES 2009 is officially on.

Less than one week after LG announced plans to unveil its 0.976-inch thick LH95 at CES 2009, Samsung says it's prepping a flat-panel TV between 0.256- to 0.276-inches thick (6.5mm to 7mm), PC World reports.

The Samsung TV would be the thinnest LCD TV ever demoed. The previous record, according to PC World, was a Philips 8mm prototype LCD that was unveiled at the IFA Electronics show in Berlin last year.

Sony also unveiled a 9.9mm flat-panel at IFA, which is on sale and the thinnest LCD in retail stores.

Samsung hasn't released any specs on the flat panel, only saying it has an LED backlight.

We'll find out more about the new Samsung flat panel at the company's press conference on Wednesday at CES 2009.
