Planar was quite busy at CEDIA Expo 2008.

Not only did it announce it was phasing out the Vidikron brand and introduce its new OPAL technology, it also previewed Runco's 2.35:1 CineWall CW-95HD in-wall projection system.

Home theaters with 2.35:1 aspect ratios was a hot topic at the show. The CW-95HD uses Runco's CineWide technology for a native 1080p resolution (1920x817) and eliminates black bars.

It also features the company's SuperOnyx DMD chipset with ConstantContrast frame-by-frame contrast correction and a CinOptx lens system with O-Path light path enhancement.

The self-contained system has a 95-inch screen with a 2.35:1 aspect ratio and Vivix II internal processing.

Runco says the two-piece system requires less than 33 inches of depth to be installed. It's low-profile design features sloping side panels.

Connectivity includes: HDMI and DVI with HDCP, Component (RCA), HD-15 (PC), S-Video, Composite and RS-232.

Other features:
  • Internal engine cooling design
  • ISFccc calibration controls suite
  • A 20-times reduction of ambient light
  • Contrast ratio 300 percent greater than standard flat panels
Runco says the system's passive cooling allows for "virtually silent" operation and uses 20 percent the power of other flat panels.

Runco's CineWall CW-95HD will ship in November for $49,995.
