At last, you can control PlayStation 3 via IR without a complex workaround.

Nyko, developer of gaming accessories, has announced the BluWave IR remote control. Simply plug the companion USB drive into any open USB port on the PS3, and it becomes an IR-controllable machine.

Learn the codes into your favorite remote or home controller, and you're ready to integrate the console into any home control system.

The BluWave replicates all of the buttons on the Sixaxis remote (official PS3 remote) allowing users to access movies and music on the built-in Blu-Ray player.
From the promo:

The Blu Wave allows you to easily control the playback of Blu-Ray movies, DVDs and CDs on the PlayStation 3 console. Utilizing infrared technology, the Blue Wave can navigate system and movie menus, skip chapters or tracks, pause and play a movie or music and replicate other PlayStation 3 controller functionality from up to 25 feet away. The compact USB IR receiver plugs into any open USB port for easy set up requiring no complicated software, pairing or programming. The Blue Wave is powered by 2 AA batteries (included).

The best news? This little life saver is only $19.99. Not surprisingly, they're on back-order.

Update

The folks at RemoteCentral alerted me to another IR adapter for the PS3: the PS916 from England-based Logic3.
