07.30.2008 — Networked-attached storage (NAS) device sales will reach nearly 13 million units by 2012, says a Parks Associates study.
"
Home Servers and Consumer Storage: Analysis and Forecasts" is attributing the growth to (surprise, surprise) the rapid increase of digital content
The study says storage devices need better file allocation, search and media sharing.
"Current file storage solutions are not equipped to handle consumers' ever-growing libraries of digital photos, music, and video," says Parks Associates research analyst Jane Shields.
"Soon the average broadband household will need close to a terabyte of storage for their media collections on PCs, portable devices, and DVRs.
"However, the industry will need to pay attention to additional features beyond storage capacity as these devices approach the mass market."
The study says additional features could help expand the role of NAS devices into media servers.
Forrester Research says 4.5 million U.S. households
will have media servers by 2012.
