mPanel from Embedded Automation Has On-board Amplification
The mPanel, introduced at EHX, features a 7-inch touchscreen display, integrated networking and onboard amplification system. Using a standard Ethernet cable and Power over Ethernet (PoE), mPanel provides up to 20 Watts per channel at 4 Ohms (additional wattage is available with an add-on module). Speakers connect directly to the panel.
The touchscreen runs Windows CE, which now is compatible with Embedded Automation’s mControl automation sofware. Although mControl made its name as a Media Center plug-in, the automation/entertainment solution can now be accessed via Win CE-embedded devices like the mPanel.
Embedded Automation CEO Ted Singh suggests that the combination control system and audio amplification, combined with a simple PoE backbone, makes mPanel “perfect solution for main entrances, kitchens, recreation rooms and covered outdoor decks needing a method to access digital music and home control.”
mPanel will be available in limited quantities in Q2 2008, with full availability in Q3 2008. Embedded Automation is shooting for a retail price of $1,500 or less. Customized front-panels are available under OEM agreements.

Embedded Automation is targeting $1,500 or less (retail). The story has been updated to reflect the pricing. Thanks.
Thanks Julie.
I continue to be baffled by the fact that Samsung can sell a Q1 for $1k, while HA touch screens that do much much less are more expensive. When I ask the companies about this, the response I get is, “we’re much cheaper than others (Crestron, AMX).
Ben, I’d love to hear the vendors chime in but I think the main reason has to do with the thermal proprieties required for in-wall installation. Also, pricing from most HA vendors tends to include automation software. In the case of this product, it includes built-in amplification too. Finally, these are low-quantity products, especially developed for resi applications. I do know integrators who use lower-cost in-walls like those from Elo Touch, which are normally used for industrial apps.
Julie,
All good reasons, but still makes you scratch your head when a company like Life|Ware sells a 7-inch wireless touch screen for $6k, and at the same time sells its software for the Q1, for $100 or so.

Looks really nice, what’s the MSRP?
