LG’s Techorator Program to Aid Installer-Designer Relations

Expert designers like Doug Wilson from "Trading Spaces" look at improving install aesthetics.

Doug Wilson, a noted interior designer from TLC’s “Trading Spaces” program, worked with LG to help homeowners in Greensburg, Kan. rebuild and redesign after surviving the devastation of a tornado.

LG Electronics has begun eliciting the aid of interior designers to help bridge the treacherous rift between home design and custom electronics.

With input from experts, like "Trading Spaces" interior designer Doug Wilson, LG's Techorator program aims to educate consumers and installers on how electronics can be installed to preserve the look of a home and enhance its design.

Communication is the Key to Success

According to Wilson, the key to fostering the relations between designers and installers is communication.

"One of my pet peeves is light switches in the middle of the living room. If the electricians had communicated with the designer, they could have moved them around the corner and the look could be cleaner," he says.

"It's about everybody being on the same page."

Wilson explains that communication must begin from the onset of a project to ensure that everyone is working together. If this is done, he argues, the homeowner's budget should not be adversely affected.

In addition to addressing communications between the parties, the Techorator program is designed to demonstrate that interior designers and electronics professionals can work together to create solutions for consumers.

"Through the LG Techorator program, custom installers will be exposed to innovative design concepts aimed at blending consumer electronics into the home," says Tim Alessi, director of advertising and technology for LG Electronics.

Alessi says many consumers rely on installers to maintain the home's style and aesthetic when installing technology.

"LG hopes to better educate consumers and custom installers on the concept of decorating with technology and not just around it," he says.

3 Expert Design Tips for Installers

For CE pros, Wilson offers these basic design tips for installers:

Stay Focused: While the fall/winter may seem like the best time to remodel an entire home, installers and homeowners shouldn't tackle it all at once.

Pick one or two rooms that would benefit from an update and start there.

Pick a Focal Point: Decide where to begin. If it is a larger living space, remember not to go overboard with one particular theme, pattern or technology.

With just a few integral pieces, the room can be made to feel spacious and comfortable.

Keep a Clean Design: With TV, speakers, DVD players and more, people today need to practice cord control. New technology and a few easy steps make it easy to maintain a cleaner, more organized look.

There are many leading technology companies that offer wireless speakers and TVs that can give a living space a crisp, modern feel. Wall-mounting a flat screen can add space and streamline the room's look and feel.
