How to Create Career Paths for Employees
How does a large company like Guardian Home Technologies have employees with 10- to 25-year tenures? Here's its secret.
It’s not uncommon for Guardian Home Technologies to have employees with 10- to 25-year tenures.
You might think a large company like Guardian Home Technologies has trouble keeping employees. On the contrary, 10- to 25-year tenures are not uncommon.
In the Home Technologies division, the company has established a career path for its technicians. Each installer receives Level 1 "boot camp" training within the first 90 days of employment.
Depending on the assessment of the performance during each step of the boot camp (as well as the quality of his fieldwork), the technician can progress to the next level.
There are four levels for Home Technology Technicians:
Sales contests are based on the company's current company strategies. So, employees are guaranteed substantial support if they choose to compete.
Participation is excellent with great prizes, such as an annual contest that awards a custom-designed Guardian gold "Super Bowl" ring, a Seiko logo watch, a Mont Blanc pen, hundreds of dollars in prize credits and a week’s worth of paid time off.
Another contest offers an all-expense paid trip to the annual Honeywell/First Alert Professional convention.
In the monthly contests, prizes consist of clothing and prize credits. All monthly winners are recognized in the company's monthly newsletter.
Guardian also has monthly recognition contests for its tech staff. The operations manager has a set number of prize credits he is permitted to distribute, based on goals set and achieved in his branch that month. Winners are recognized with a photo and story in the newsletter.
To promote outstanding customer service at all levels by all employees, Guardian's Customer Service Department offers the STAR (Service Tops All Reward). This is a monthly recognition to one employee for going above and beyond the call of duty in servicing a customer.
The employee can work in any division of the company except, of course, customer service. The winner receives a gift certificate and is recognized with a photo and story in the company newsletter.
