Gefen HDMI Extender Enables IR Control
Extends signals 100 (1080i) or 50 meters (1080p) over two CAT-5 cables.
Gefen's new HDMI IR Extender carries HD signals 100 (1080i) or 50 meters (1080p).
The system extends the format with IR back channel control over two CAT-5 cables, enabling rack mounted components to be controlled from anywhere in the home.
The HDMI IR Extender uses small sender and receiver units to connect local and remote devices. An IR Blaster is connected to the source.
An optional RMT IR Extender at the receiving end allows the receiver to be located out of sight.
Gefen says the system compensates for CAT-5 cable skews to ensure full HD quality.
The Gefen HDMI IR Extender is available for pre-order for $575. The optional RMT IR Extender is $24.99.
Expect the HDMI IR Extender to ship in August.

This should be a pretty useful unit…with the addition of IR control and close if not perfect HD over cat5 I can see this being used a lot in basic and intermediate home theaters.
