First Look: iPort In-Wall iPad Dock

Integrator says CM2000 flush-mount iPad dock "looks really cool in the wall."

Manufacturers are rushing to get in-wall iPad docks to market, but so far we haven't seen much. We've seen tabletop docs for iPad, and we've seen in-wall stations for the iPod. We've also seen the slick iPad in-wall from Savant.

Now we finally have a picture of the forthcoming CM2000 in-wall iPad dock from iPort.

Keith Rose of Inspired Electronics, Palatine, Ill., posted the above photo on RemoteCentral.com.

He says, "The iPad looks really cool in the wall. Very flush, paintable bezel, solid construction. They did a nice job on it."

The CM2000 will retail for $499. Currently, dealers are debating the price of the dock in the "comments" section of our original story.

iPort's Jason Sloan points to market research that indicates $499 is "solidly in line with where our dealer base wanted and expected the products to price out."

Savant's product is priced at $350.

Both products will be demonstrated at CEDIA Expo 2010.

This is what im talking about! Finally a cool looking in-wall dock.

You scared me with the last article Julie. http://www.cepro.com/article/iport_ships_in_wall_ipad_ipod_touch_docks/ I thought we were in for another giant ugly bezel like the one from Savant.

Cant wait for the “it costs to much” crowd to chime in LOL.

@39CentStamp:  You obviously haven’t seen the one from Savant. The bezel is smaller and it hides more of the black edge. You only see the screen.

I have seen the images they have posted. Their mistake was covering the black space making the bezel twice as wide as it needs to be and creating the ridiculous half moon cut out for the home button. When the iPad is in the wall in it’s off state (where it is 90% of the time) it will look better in the sonance dock.

Now we are getting somewhere. What’s all in that back box? Got more pics? Looking like its not just a piece of plastic and may have more value than previously appeared. Good!

From what I can make out here this looks 10x better than the Savant unit.

Can we stop calling these types of products “docks”?  It is so deceiving.  A dock and docking refer to something that is movable.  If I tell a client that this is an iPad dock they will be yelling at me when they have to remove it from the wall with a screwdriver!  This is a “mount”, you are permenantly mounting this device in the wall most likely being used as a control device.  The i-room one that Phillip linked to is a true “dock” for the iPad where it can be easily removed.  Just my 2 cents and grumbling for the day.

The iPad can be removed from the idocx. The bezel is removable. What do you suggest everybody call them?

A mount mounts. A dock docks. This product is a mount and a dock so either term is acceptable. “iPort” is the product name. Use that if you are worried about crazy clients.

There are such things as crazy clients?

Nick - I understand what you are saying, I guess I’m more referring to the simplicity of what a dock implies.  Having to remove a bezel is not something I would consider simple for the customer.  I guess I’m assuming that this is not a simple “grab and go” piece.  I suggest that something like this be called a mount for the iPad since it would seem it is intended to remain in the wall behind the bezel most of the time.  But it’s all semantics really, not a big deal, just not enough coffee I guess.

Always have to think about the crazy clients right?!
