FCC Fields 28,000 DTV Tech Assistance Calls
Bombarded with converter box questions after 421 stations made early DTV switch.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) fielded more than 28,000 calls from consumers needing help setting up converter boxes or simply asking how to find digital channels.
The FCC will receive no pity from the custom electronics installation industry. Installers are accustomed to fielding phone calls from clients confused about their audio/video systems. Tuesday, it was the FCC's turn.
Over 400 broadcasters shut off their analog signals on Tuesday, even though the federal government has extended the DTV conversion deadline to June 12, 2009.
The FCC says it has reps in 72 markets to help consumers with early switch-related issues. It expects a lot more calls this week.
