Ethereal One of First CE Vendors to Support DisplayPort
Well known for its contributions to HDMI, Ethereal will make a DisplayPort cable in response to inquiries from TV manufacturers.
Ethereal’s EXS-DP2 DisplayPort cable
Ethereal is well known for its high-quality HDMI connectivity solutions, including cables, testers, and extender devices. So it was baffling to see the company come out with a DisplayPort cable, the EXS-DP2.
DisplayPort is a new digital display interface standard established by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). It defines a “license-free, royalty-free” A/V interconnect that originally was intended for the PC industry, which was looking for a faster, leaner solution to HDMI when it came to connecting PCs with displays.
But there’s been talk of DisplayPort in the consumer electronics space. Dell is said to be using the solution for its LCD TVs. Pioneer and Samsung, it appears, have been toying with the idea as well.
Ethereal’s Brent McCall says he received a call a few months ago from a large TV manufacturer that said, “We’re pushing for this [DisplayPort]. Are you going to support it?”
McCall says it’s no problem building a DisplayPort cable: “It has 20 conductors instead of [HDMI’s] 19,” he says. “Technologically, it’s like manufacturing HDMI.”
The big question was, “Is there a market for it?”
McCall isn’t completely convinced but Ethereal is making the cable anyway. He says that DisplayPort is no miracle cure for HDMI: “I think that every single problem that exists in HDMI exists in DisplayPort. Like distance – you’re still putting high-speed data on a small cable.”
And McCall doesn’t buy DisplayPort’s claim of being “royalty free.” He says that “absolutely” there will be royalties to pay somewhere.
Visit Ethereal at CES, South Hall 1, booth #20931.
Many DisplayPort products will be shown at CES in the DisplayPort TechZone pavilion (booth #71857).
