Audyssey’s DSX Journeys Beyond 5.1 Audio

New post-processing technology adds speakers to overcome limitations of 5.1 surround sound, says company.

For those who want a little more oomph from their 5.1 audio systems, Audyssey Laboratories says it has just the thing. The room correction and post-processing technology maker announced its latest innovation, Dynamic Surround Expansion, this week.

DSX, as Audyssey calls it, is “a scalable system that adds new speakers to overcome the spatial sound rendering limitations faced by 5.1 surround sound systems. It says human hearing requires more than what 5.1 systems currently offer.

“DSX creates additional channels to augment 5.1 systems with the correct direction, time of arrival and frequency response characteristics to achieve a seamless and expanded soundstage,” writes Audyssey in a press release.

Basically, DSX builds on a 5.1 setup by providing a pair of wide channels and a pair of height channels to render the additional information. It also provides Surround Envelopment Processing to improve the blend between the front and surround channels for a seamless and immersive soundstage, according to the company.

Current 7.1 systems can be adapted to DSX by moving the back surround speakers to the wide locations for improved envelopment.

Several receivers with DSX will be available in June from Audyssey licensees, it adds.

Audyssey, which has released audio technologies such as MultEQ and Dynamic Volume, has partnered with receiver manufacturers like Denon, NAD, Integra, Crestron, Phase Technology and Wisdom Audio in the past.
