At Last: Vudu on a Chip

Zoran's implementation should expedite the adoption of Vudu Movies and Vudu Apps in third-party CE devices.

Vudu, which has reportedly been acquired by Walmart, finally gets what it’s always wanted: Vudu on a chip.

The implementation comes from Zoran Corp., which supplies processing technologies to major TV manufacturers. Zoran announced last week it would incorporate Vudu technology into its SupraHD TV processor design platforms.

In addition to Vudu Movies – the hallmark of Vudu technology – the new design will include Vudu’s new app engine, which was introduced at CES 2010.

At launch, Vudu Apps include Pandora internet radio, Picasa picture sharing, Facebook, Twitter, and several TV, news, and video podcast providers.

Zoran is introducing Vudu Apps in an increasingly crowded market of Internet-connected TV app platforms, including the Yahoo! Connected TV platform, Panasonic VieraCast, Samsung Internet@TV, and LG NetCast.

Vudu Apps does offer a few distinguishing features: Other than the Yahoo! TV widget platform, Vudu Apps appears to be the only cross-brand app platform and has the potential to bring a more unified interface and app selection to multiple brands.

To date, however, the implementation of Vudu by third-party CE vendors has been limited to a handful of LG devices and Mitsubishi Unisen series LCDs (although Vudu-enabled devices from Samsung, Sanyo, Sharp, Toshiba, and Vizio apparently are in the works). Although Vudu started out as a hardware and software vendor, the company eventually moved away from its own Vudu boxes to focus on OEM offerings.

Zoran Corporation (Nasdaq: ZRAN), the U.S. market share leader for processors in flat panel televisions according to DisplaySearch, should speed the adoption of Vudu among CE vendors.

VUDU Movies offers over 3,000 titles available to rent or purchase, with many available in HDX offering Blu-ray quality 1080p picture Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround sound.

Unfortunately, Vudu Movies (and TV shows) are the only interesting video offerings in the new Vudu Apps. Missing are the more popular applications such as Netflix, Amazon, Boxee, Hulu and Clicker.
