Apple to Release Connected TV, DVR?
Apple, always the master of spreading rumors about itself, is at it again. This rumor is about Apple possibly releasing a connected TV, including DVR and home media functionality, that will sync with Macs, iPods and iPhones.
TheStreet.com quotes analyst Piper Jaffray who says Apple could release the connected TV by 2011.
"The device would push Apple further into the digital living room with interactive TV, music, movie, and gaming features," Jaffray says. "Such a device would command a premium among a competitive field of budget TVs."
The article also says Apple is planning to overhaul its Apple TV offering, and is rumored to be creating an iTunes-like subscription model for downloading video.
So even though many custom retailers missed out on becoming resellers of iPods, I don’t see how Apple will pitch a product suite like this without supporting the custom installation channel. It has to!
Apple, by the way, is planning a major event for Sept. 9. Is it just a coincidence that this is press day at CEDIA Expo 2009?

I’m pretty certain that CEDIA does not represent a big enough reason for time any press announcement - especially as it’s probably the usual iPod revs ready for the holiday buying season.
Of course that’s not to say that what they announce (their ‘cocktail’ multimedia digital album format?) won’t have a major impact on our industry. If the cocktail rumors are true (and similarly the rumors about major labels creating a competing format) it will certainly raise the bar for any system currently showing basic meta data and cover art.
