87% of PS3 Owners Watch Blu-ray on Console, Study Finds

EMA study says the PlayStation 3 will be the driving force behind Blu-ray sales until 2009.

PS3 as Blu-ray Player?
Is anyone recommending the PlayStation 3 as the best Blu-ray player for their customers? It doesn't have RS-232 and has crappy IR connectivity, but it does have Ethernet…

The PlayStation 3 appears to be the Blu-ray player of choice, as 87 percent of PS3 owners watch Blu-ray movies on their console, says a report from the Entertainment Merchants Association.

The "2008 Annual Report on the Home Entertainment Industry" says the PS3 will remain the driving force behind Blu-ray sales until 2009.

Microsoft, which did not integrate a HD DVD drive into the Xbox 360 sold only 316,000 HD DVD add-ons for the console in 2007, the reports says.

PS3 sales, in large part because of its Blu-ray compatibility, were close to 3 million by the end of 2007.

And that's just one of the reasons the PS3 should be the Blu-ray player you install in your customers' home theater.

The report also says Blu-ray will outsell standard DVDs in 2012, generating more than $9.5 billion in sales.

I could see that since a bunch of my friends that did purchase a PS3 did so for the Blu-Ray mostly.

I picked up the ps3 back in 07 primarily for the Blu Ray to watch on my front projection, it was a no brainer since I was a casual gamer, and now that games are rolling out for the system its even better than it was before.

I wonder the percentage of PS3 users that use their systems for gaming…

I notice the 10 reasons link doesn’t say the ps3’s the only BD player whose load to play time doesn’t blow chunks - is that not the case anymore (it certainly used to be) or is that something sony doesn’t like people mentioning?

For those of us with a lowly one-room setup, the PS3 kicks butt.  I just hooked mine up to my HDMI-capable AVR, and shoved in a copy of a movie.  In less than 20 seconds, I was watching the flick.  Total time from unboxing to watching was about 5 min.  Many of us don’t need all of the fancy networking or multi-room remote controls.  It might not be the best for a networked house system, but for the rest of us, it shines compared to the competition.

I am using a PS3 in a dedicated theater as the BD source.  There is one large flaw-control.  The PS3 is a Bluetooth device so controlling via standard universal remotes is not a good option.  I am using a PS2 adapter and controlling some basic functions via IR but still have to pick up the PS3 control sometimes when I watch movies.
