5 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About the Geek Squad
Where'd the uniform come from? And what's up with Adam West?

11.08.2007 — Robert Stephens, who gave the keynote address at EHX Fall on Wednesday, delivered a brief history of the company and his experiences starting up a business in the service industry.

Along the way, Stephens shared a few things about the Geek Squad that you probably didn't know.

The Uniform: Where'd It Come From?

Stephens got the idea for the Geek Squad uniform after watching Apollo 13.

"They've got a uniform and they don't even know it," he said. Plus, the whole idea of NASA working together as a team stuck with him.

When it comes to wearing the dark tie, Stephens jokes with employees, "That little pressure you feel around your neck is my hand."

Custom Made Shoes With Imprints

Geek Squad agents actually wear custom shoes that the company has made special in China.

The shoes have reversed Geek Squad logos on the bottom for imprints in the ground, he said.

Humans take 7,000 steps per day, he found -- that's a lot of easy marketing.

Batman: All You Need for Marketing

Stephens grew up watching Batman with Adam West and Burt Ward.

"The real Batman," as he says.

"Batman teaches us everything we need to know about standing out and marketing," he said, pointing out the identifiable Batmobile as a way to market your business.

Geek Squad started using identifiable cars as work vehicles, settling on the VW Bug as the trademark vehicle.

A Ramen Noodle Startup

"Ramen noodle really represents the start-up," said Stephens, who said he lived on it while in college and founding the company.

"The best thing that ever happened to me was that when I started my company, I had no money," he said, adding that money from sources like venture capitalists complicates the start-up process.

Apparently, the salty meal also has some positive side effects.

"There are hidden nutritional benefits," he said, noting that Momofuku Ando, inventor of the instant noodles, recently died at the ripe old age of 96.

Employees Wiki Their Experiences

Geek Squad employees often come across new problems when servicing their customers, so in order to share with their co-workers, they use a wiki as a knowledge base to share their experiences.

In fact, Stephens made reference to a number of Web 2.0 technologies, including social networking.

"Each of your companies is like a social network for hire. You're to trying to get [workers] to share information," he said.

I wish avsforum would stop linking to an article by posting the first paragraph in the main page link. Then if you click on the main page, you get the article from the beginning down to the ramen noodle section. Then you have to click AGAIN to get the last paragraph. And its posted word for word, not a summary. Its really bad form to link to an article by posting 80% of it but not ALL of it.

I am impressed by Mr. Stephens marketing and sales abilities.

It’s too bad Geek Squad is so terrible at fixing people’s computers. All they are is a gimmick and it’s useless if the techs can’t even fix a computer. It seems they are at the top of every list I’ve seen as one of the worst computer repair companies out there. Just do a Google search and you’ll find a ton of undercover news investigations where Geek Squad misdiagnosed people’s computers and were overcharging them for parts they prbably didn’t even need.

My cousin had her computer looked at by them and they charged her for parts she didn’t even need and completely erased her hard drive to fix an issue which could’ve been solved easily. Geek Squad is way too overpriced at the $125 per hour they charge especially since they have such unskilled techs.

People need to stop getting sucked in by a name when they need service for their computers and actually do their research. It seems consumers see the Geek Squad and think that because they are attached to a big box retailer that these guys should be able to fix their problem. No so at all. It’s better to choose a local computer shop than go with the Geek Squad.

I believe I should clarify my first comment with an addendum: I am impressed by Mr. Stephens marketing and sales abilities, NOT the performance of the geek squad.

Sometimes it depends on the area you live in as to which place is best at fixing your PC.  In my college town, the local Best Buy or Circuit City actually offers better service than any of the local PC shops.  A few of the techs are even highly skilled.  example: I used to work at Circuit City as a Firedog and I have 2 Microsoft Certs.  Albeit the price is extremely high for service and there is constant pressure to upsell whenever possible.  However, my town is different from the majority of communities in the US.  I feel that poor business practices are rampant in the entire PC repair industry.  It’s just easier to spot on the large retailers because they do so more more business than a small computer store.
