3D & HDMI: What to Expect at EHX Spring 2010

We already told you about three of the most popular CEDIA University courses being offered at EHX Spring 2010.

But that doesn’t mean there won’t be other new and exciting classes.

CEDIA University will target emerging trends and technologies that are poised to influence the custom electronics industry. Translation: New revenue opportunities for your business.

"For the last couple of years, technology has been in a refinement cycle," says Dave Pedigo, senior director of technology at CEDIA. "I think that we are on the apex of another round of newer technologies coming out, particularly in the green arena, 3D, and in some wireless devices, especially in the retrofit market. We're getting to the point where we're going to really see some game changing technologies."

Before you can reap the benefits of new technologies, it is critical to understand their functionality and place in the CE industry.

3D is the Future

3D technologies will be explored in "High Definition 3DTV: What You Must Know." This course will cover:

• Formats (checkerboard, over-under, left-right, etc.)
• Passive vs. active glasses
• Compression and content types

Attendees also will find out where 3D is expected to go in the next few years and when to expect 4K 3D and glasses-free (stereoscopic) 3D.

"3D is evolving very quickly at this point," Pedigo says. "There have been announcements by major manufacturers where they really anticipate a sizeable amount of their products, even starting second half of next year, will be 3D compatible.

"This class is certainly is a big draw because it's going to cover the technologies that are coming to market. It's really complicated at this point so we're going to try to clear up some of the complications and help attendees understand where 3D is and where it’s going."

HDMI Troubleshooting

Another technology making an impact in the custom electronics market is HDMI. Just because many CE pros are already implementing HDMI doesn't mean they are fluent in it.

"HDMI Troubleshooting" will dive into the root causes of HDMI failures, how to test for compliance, and steps to resolve those problems. This course will teach participants how to ID common HDMI/HDCP failures and read and interpret HDMI test specs.

"This is an incredible opportunity because so many electronic systems contractors have really experienced difficulties in regard to HDMI," says Pedigo. "CEDIA University is putting together a class on how to identify and overcome specific HDMI related problems."
