Jason Knott | 04/04 12:55 PM,

After doing in-depth research with consumers who have home control systems from different manufacturers, Orem, Utah-based control manufacturer Vantage Controls came to a sobering conclusion: “Most consumers are not happy with their systems, but think their integrators are great guys,” says Andrew Wale, vice president of marketing for Vantage. That conclusion, Wale says, is being used as a fundamental basis for Vantage’s new line of products, including a 7-inch touchpanel and a sleek programmable single-gang LCD keypad called Equinox Control. Both units feature a single layer user interface that simplifies…

Controlling a $15M Bel Air Mansion
Jason Knott | 11/08 07:31 AM,

Some houses are just jinxed. That might be the case with this Westco Smart Homes project: a 12,000-square-foot modern-style masterpiece that sits in a perfect location in wealthy Bel Air, Calif. In the past six years, the house, which was originally designed as an Italian villa, has suffered an indoor fire, a lightning strike and an earthquake. Through all of that, the house has changed ownership, changed contractors and changed developers. But that’s just the sort of challenge that Westco Smart Homes owner Jack Goldberg likes. Westco took over the…

Weather Station for Big Weather Nerds Now Measures Snow
Julie Jacobson | 09/27 10:15 AM,

Weather buffs, rejoice! One of the best weather stations on the planet just got better. WeatherHawk has added snow to the conditions that can be monitored -- in addition to temperature, wind, rain, humidity and all the other things that weather nerds watch. WeatherHawk is arguably the leader in integration-friendly weather stations that can tie into home automation systems -- like, let me sleep in if it’s raining; alert me when the wind conditions are perfect for sailing; or adjust the indoor thermostats and humidifiers depending on the relative humidity.…

Booths at CEDIA Expo Create Strange Bedfellows
Jason Knott | 08/22 07:58 AM,
10 Comments
In many ways, building a booth for CEDIA Expo 2011 is like constructing a sand castle at the beach. It takes a lot of hard work, is wondrous when it's completed, and then "gets washed away" after just three short days. Building these momentary exhibits is complicated and often requires manufacturers to partner with each other to bring the technology to life. Display manufacturers need switchers and cable; cable companies need displays; projector companies need screens. Sometimes, strange bedfellows can be made. Certainly, it must mean something to find home…

Vantage iPhone & iPad app
Robert Archer | 01/10 05:53 AM,
Jan. 2011 was quite a month in the world of universal remote controls. Both Philips and Universal Electronics Inc. (UEI) announced that they were respectfully discontinuing their Pronto and Nevo univeral remote product lines. Undoubtedly, one of the reasons why these companies are leaving the remote category is the proliferation of remote control apps for Apple's iPad and iPhone products. A good example of the growing array of control apps on the market can be found in Utah, where Orem-based Vantage just launched its new iPad and iPhone control apps.…

How the iPad Will Shatter Touchscreen Pricing
Jason Knott | 04/02 07:17 AM,
25 Comments
Vantage/Legrand says the iPad will shatter existing pricing, software, and physical format of touchscreens. "There will always be a place for dedicated touchscreens, but the iPad certainly breaks paradigms in the industry in terms of what it does vs. other existing touchpanels in the market," says Andrew Wale, Vantage/Legrand VP of marketing, who called home automation the iPad's "killer app." "It's not inconceivable that the iPad will create the potential for some dealers to move away from dedicated touchscreens. But the big unanswered question is will there be available home…

Vantage Energy Management Solution (EMS)
Robert Archer | 03/10 06:49 AM,
Now that home automation is widely recognized as an efficient means of energy conservation, consumers are requiring immediate feedback as to how much of their investment into a home automation solution is yielding in energy savings. Vantage's Energy Management Solution (EMS) has been engineered to provide that exact information. According to the Utah-based company, some energy management dashboards simply estimate savings, its EMS product however, calculates in real time the exact dollar amount a homeowner is saving on energy. Vantage adds that its EMS option is also based on a…

Are You Afraid of Automation Startups?
Julie Jacobson | 11/10 10:25 AM,
7 Comments
Colorado vNet's closure, and subsequent acquisition by Russound, has led CE pros to wonder if they should do business with home-control startups. The debate rages with 65 comments and counting across several of our vNet stories. They are concerned — and they should be — that: Their inventory is worthlessWork in progress is a complete write-offExisting installations must be built from scratch as soon as a single controller failsSome industry folks suggest never doing business with newcomers; others say never do business with VC-funded companies. So, assuming vNet does not…
