Samsung recently unveiled details on its line of 2012 TVs, which includes 43 LCD models and 16 plasmas. Samsung said its goal in 2012 was to “redefine what a TV can be,” according to Joe Stinziano, Samsung senior VP of home entertainment (US). To fulfill that, the new products include features such as a dual-core CPU to enable faster task-switching and app launching; integrated digital cameras for video chat and smart TV features; voice and gesture control; a new touch-pad remote; and a new integrated web browser. Samsung Super OLED TV
Jason Knott | 01/10 08:50 AM, 2 Comments
Not to be outdone by other display companies, Samsung unveiled its 55-inch Super OLED TV at CES 2012 with an array of features, including a built-in camera, microphones, numerous connectivity features and voice, motion and face control. Super OLED technology eliminates the need for a color filter as the OLED pixel unit comprises self-emitting RGB sub-pixels laid directly on the display panel, each emitting its own light. The technology is also able to differentiate varying degrees of blacks and shadows for greater detail. “Samsung has had a long and successful… View this story

Sony is selling its nearly 50 percent stake in an LCD joint venture with Samsung Electronics to Samsung for $940 million, according to Reuters. Reuters says Sony has been seeking an exit from the seven-year-old joint venture and had previously cut its contribution by 15 percent. Sony is seeking cheaper outsourcing alternatives for its TVs than funding this joint venture, says Reuters. The partnership was originally established so Sony could be guaranteed supplies for its flat screen business. What effect, if any, this move means for CE pros seeking supplies… View this story

Smart appliances may hold a lot of promise for the home of the future, but you wouldn’t know it by CEDIA Expo 2011. Two companies showed white goods at the Expo: Samsung and Wolf/Sub-Zero (in the Control4 booth). One was really smart, one not-so-smart. Let’s start with the latter. Samsung’s RF4289 “smart refrigerator” had a very pretty touchscreen with built-in WiFi and speakers hidden in the ice dispensers, but that was about it. There were no energy-management features or integration to speak of. Instead, the $3500 unit is “more a… View this story

Panasonic, Samsung, Sony and XpanD are joining forces to develop a standard for active 3D glasses. The new standard, called "Full HD 3D Glasses Initiative," will develop and license radio frequency (RF) 3D active glasses technology and "multiple types of infrared (IR) system protocols." Currently, 3D glasses from a given company generally don't work with other manufacturers' TVs. This initiative aims to bring 3D glasses to the market that can be used on any new 3D TV. According to the companies, the Full HD 3D Glasses Initiative is targeted to… View this story
