Someday your floor could be the only security sensor you need for the home, if IBM moves ahead with a patent granted on March 20, “Securing premises using surfaced-based computing technology.” The patent describes a multitouch floor that can determine who is in the house, and what they’re doing. Standard Proposed for PERS Response

In yet another sign of how much more home health technology is moving into the realm of security, the Central Station Alarm Association (CSAA) has proposed the Personal Emergency Reporting System (PERS) central procedure standard (CS-PERS-01) for public comment. The standard calls for two attempts at verification, along with specific steps to be taken if the operator receives a busy signal or answering machine. PERS System Helps Convict Murderer

A murderer picked the wrong house when he killed a woman in her sleep. The elderly mother living with the victim subscribed to a personal emergency response (PERS) service. When she heard the commotion, the mother pressed her PERS pendant to open up a line of communication with the monitoring station. The central station recorded a conversation between the woman and the attacker, which helped to establish the man's state of mind during the incident, and ultimately lead to his murder conviction.
