Samsung ‘Super OLED’ 55-inch TV Stuns at CES

Not to be outdone by other display companies, Samsung unveiled its 55-inch Super OLED TV at CES 2012 with an array of features, including a built-in camera, microphones, numerous connectivity features and voice, motion and face control. Super OLED technology eliminates the need for a color filter as the OLED pixel unit comprises self-emitting RGB sub-pixels laid directly on the display panel, each emitting its own light. LG to Show ‘World’s Largest’ OLED, 3D TVs at CES

LG Electronics is creating pre-CES buzz with an announcement that it will be showing a 55-inch OLED TV, 84-inch Ultra Definition 3D TV and 72-inch 3D LED, which it claims to be "the world's largest." Cost of the sets is unknown at this point. According to the LA Times, an LG executive says the company has overcome the high-cost barriers associated with OLED. Remember OLED TVs? Super-thin and colorful OLED technology has been the next seismic thing in TV tech for a while. We keep seeing prototypes that blow everyone away, but they cost a bundle and generally aren’t available. Then we forget about them. Well, OLED TVs are poised to make a comeback, or a debut, or a comeback debut. Sony Stops Selling OLED TVs in Japan

With all the momentum 3D TV has created, something in the display industry had to fall through the cracks. For Sony, it looks like that will be OLED. Sony has halted production and sales of its XEL-1 OLED in its home country of Japan, according to Reuters. Sony will continue to sell the model in other countries, but this can't be a good sign for the energy-efficient technology. It also made for a pretty expensive one. The XEL-1 cost $2,500.
