Filed today in the U.S. District Court in Minnesota, the company also links Best Buy to the lawsuit. Self-contained systems is one of CE Pro's Top 5 Home Technology Opportunities for 2012. We will be profiling each trend over the next week as part of our State of the Industry Report. Once upon a time there was a strict dichotomy between security and automation systems. Sure, you can access your smart thermostat from a smart phone to let the HVAC system know you’re on the way home. But exactly when will you get there? Are you three hours away at the cabin? Or are you just across town at the office? It makes a big difference, you know. You wouldn’t want the house to start warming up or cooling down a moment too soon, lest it add to your utility bill. Not to worry, Allure Energy, based in in Austin, Texas, knows where you are… View this story

One of the standard rites of passage for an alarm technician is drilling out and installing contact closures in door jambs and window sills. But that skill won't be necessary if security manufacturer Honeywell (NYSE: HON) and window and door maker Andersen Corporation have their way. Honeywell and Andersen are collaborating on a first-of-its-kind system that allows security alarms to alert homeowners if their windows or doors are unlocked. Honeywell's widely used 5800 series of wireless sensors with VeriLock sensor technology will now be embedded in the locking mechanisms of… View this story

Verizon demonstrated a home automation and security solution at CES 2011, but the telco hasn’t said much since January. Now it appears we have a price for Verizon Home Monitoring and Control, which is powered by Motorola 4Home: $9.99 per month for basic service.
