Honeywell is “all in” on the connected home, and it says security dealers should be too. In a strong indicator of just how much alarm integrators are embracing home automation, Honeywell Security president Scott Harkins says 30 percent of all Honeywell Vista and Lynx 5100 alarm panels are now also sold with attached Z-Wave devices for home automation. Harkins says the average number of Z-Wave devices per panel is three to four and “growing almost every month,” adding “we saw an explosion, literally, in sales with attachment rates of Z-Wave… View this story

Honeywell has announced plans to make its Vista alarm panels compatible with Lutron’s RadioRA 2. The end result doesn’t just add lighting into Honeywell’s offering, but also new energy savings and security options. Honeywell says the panels now support Lutron’s lighting, shade and temperature control technology. Those lighting scenes can help homeowners save on energy bills and can even be tied into security options. For instance, when you arm the Vista, the Lutron system can be triggered to turn off lights, close the shades, and even roll back the temperature.… View this story

It's an unfortunate situation that most homeowners' key rings look more like a janitor rather than someone that owns a single-family property. Honeywell's latest release could ease the burden of homeowners having to carry around a wad of keys and other devices on their key rings. The company's latest addition to its 5800 Series of security components allows homeowners to use their existing keyfobs to open and close their garage doors and other relay-activated items. The newly introduced 5877 wireless relay module can be used as an add-on to the… View this story

Honeywell is making it simple to add home automation and Web services to traditional security panels, thanks to the new Tuxedo Touch (6280i) Wi-Fi touchscreen. The seven-inch wall-mounted unit integrates Honeywell security panels with Z-Wave home automation devices, surveillance cameras and Web services. For Honeywell, “it’s always been about life safety,” says Rob Puric, director, product management and marketing. “But convergence is becoming just as important.” The touchscreen is not a self-contained security system, a la Honeywell’s Lynx 5100, but it does add automation and other services to full-featured Honeywell… View this story

The Nest learning thermostat has been receiving a lot of good buzz. But Honeywell isn’t so pleased. Honeywell has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Nest Labs, alleging that the start-up company has infringed on seven Honeywell patents related to thermostat technology. Filed today in the U.S. District Court in Minnesota, the company also links Best Buy to the lawsuit. Specifically, Honeywell says Nest is infringing on the following patents: U.S. Patent No. 7,634,504 – “Natural Language Installer Set Up for Controller” U.S. Patent No. 7,142,948 – “Controller Interface with… View this story

Self-contained systems is one of CE Pro's Top 5 Home Technology Opportunities for 2012. We will be profiling each trend over the next week as part of our State of the Industry Report. Once upon a time there was a strict dichotomy between security and automation systems. The two must remain separate but integrated, it has been argued, in order to maintain the integrity of the security system. But in 2011 we saw an explosion of self-contained systems that blur the line between security and other home technologies, integrating all… View this story

Sure, you can access your smart thermostat from a smart phone to let the HVAC system know you’re on the way home. But exactly when will you get there? Are you three hours away at the cabin? Or are you just across town at the office? It makes a big difference, you know. You wouldn’t want the house to start warming up or cooling down a moment too soon, lest it add to your utility bill. Not to worry, Allure Energy, based in in Austin, Texas, knows where you are… View this story
