Amid the excitement over the New iPad was the barely mentioned Apple TV. No this isn’t the iTV or Apple smart TV many thought was coming. It’s just an updated version of the earlier Apple TV, but it comes with some welcome updates. The most important upgrade for home theater fans is the new support for 1080p video. You can get 1080p video from iTunes and other services and enjoy them in all their pixels on a 1080p display. Apple TV is also integrated with iTunes in the Cloud. Any…

NuForce Dia digital integrated amplifier
Robert Archer | 12/01 06:46 AM,
Back in the day there were two ways to listen to music: vinyl and the radio. Today however, vinyl and the radio are just two of the choices music fans have, and in fact many people start with a record or the radio and move on to a CD, DVD, Blu-ray, SACD, DVD-Audio, streaming Internet radio, a streaming service or their iTunes software before they are done with their music listening activities. NuForce's new Dia digital integrated amplifier is a compact all-in-one solution that supports a music enthusiast's ability to…

Music Hall dac15.2 digital to analog converter
Robert Archer | 10/18 03:10 AM,
With the popularity of the CD waning consumers are increasingly utilizing the convenience of the digital download to satisfy their musical entertainment needs. Before the explosion of USB equipped digital-to-analog converters (DAC) devices in the consumer electronics market there were few ways that people could easily listen to their digital downloads through their home audio equipment. Now with the introduction of affordable solutions like the dac15.2 from Music Hall homeowners can easily connect their computers, Apple TVs and other digital components to their stereo systems to listen to their digital…

Advancements in digital media and a new system design are just two of the big reasons why Savant announced its new SmartSystems platform last week, replacing Rosie and Protégé. “It was created based on the desire to build the next generation platform for new media, incorporating smart streaming content and HDMI 1.4,” says Jim Carroll, president of Savant. Check out this short consumer-oriented video to give you a glimpse. The system now allows integrators to create a robust digital entertainment system based on the embedded iTunes digital media server to…

Streaming Media Needs a Navigation Makeover
Jason Knott | 01/18 12:55 PM,
10 Comments
I can still remember seeing my first “home automation” system 20 years ago at the International Security Conference. It was from security panel maker Digital Security Control (DSC), now part of Tyco. The product wasn’t getting too much attention back in 1990 for various reasons, but I recall how clunky it was to have to move menu to menu to control HVAC, lighting, security and other subsystems, especially since it was hardkey-based with a tiny black-and-white LED scrolling readout. It kind of reminds me of navigating streaming media content today.…

Stockpile Original Apple TVs Today!
Julie Jacobson | 11/11 07:54 AM,
8 Comments
You know you love integrating Apple TV with whole-house audio, video and home automation systems. But soon the Gen 1 product will disappear and you’re stuck with the second-generation version. The Gen 2 Apple TV is cute, but it has no hard drive, no analog audio outputs and no component video. Plus, it doesn't play nice with third-party control systems. As we wrote earlier: The next-gen Apple TV 2 is tiny, efficient and cheap ... but not friendly to third-party control systems. While the original Apple TV is a full-featured…

Next-Gen Apple TV Doesn’t Play Nice with Home Control
Julie Jacobson | 10/20 07:25 AM,
20 Comments
If you like integrating Apple TV with home control -- as many CE Pros do -- it’s best to stick with the original model rather than “upgrade” to the new Apple TV 2. Autonomic Controls and Extra Vegetables, two of the original and most popular creators of two-way Apple TV drivers, tell CE Pro that the new Apple TV does not lend itself to integration. Follow us on Twitter! juliejacobson ce_pro“We confirmed that the new device has changed the protocol in a manner that makes it controllable only by other…

Apple Adds Streaming Apple TV, iTunes 10, iPods
Steve Crowe | 09/01 12:01 PM,
0 Comments
After days of rumors, we now know what Apple had up its sleeve for its event at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco. Steve Jobs was on hand unveiling the new Apple TV, iTunes 10 with social networking, iOS 4.1, a sneek peak at iOS 4.2 and new iPod Shuffles, Nanos, and Touches. Calling it a “hobby” due to its lack of success, Jobs showed the new version of Apple TV, a box that is about one-fourth the size of the previous version. There will…

How to Capitalize on Apple TV
Robert Archer | 06/24 08:30 AM,
6 Comments
With product introductions like the iPad, the iPhone and iPod touch, Apple has commanded the attention of consumers, custom integrators and manufacturers. One product that's a member of the same iTunes electronics family that has flown under the radar, however, is Apple TV. This media aggregation/streaming device has been primarily a niche product for hardcore Apple enthusiasts - even before Steve Jobs' remark about it being more of a "hobby" for the company. Surprisingly perhaps, more custom installers are joining that niche. CE pros are embracing Apple TV as a…

With rumors flying about a new iPhone and possibly Apple TV it seems that Apple is certain to make some news this week at the Apple World Wide Developers Conference in San Francisco. A couple of Apple related products that are certain to be announced this week at another major electronics trade event is Premier Mounts' new VIP-100 and VIP-200 iPad mounting frames. Premier is set to introduce these accessories at Infocomm, and the company says the mounts can be used to safely secure an iPad to a table or…
