Toshiba Ultra HD 4K TVs Launch at CES 2013
The main attention grabber is the Ultra HD (4K) TV series. Toshiba will be offer three Ultra HD models in the L9300 series in 58-, 65- and 84-inch sizes. All are edge-let LED LCDs with local dimming and a CEVO4K processor. Toshiba’s Scott Ramirez described the processor as Quad+Dual.
All three 4K models are passive 3D and do 2D-to-3D conversion. They include a ClearScan 240Hz refresh rate and a CQ Engine which offers advanced picture quality controls.
Toshiba’s Ultra HD TVs will be available around June 2013, but pricing was not announced.
In addition to the 4K TVs, Toshiba is launching a new Cloud TV platform, which they describe as going beyond mere streaming apps on a TV. Ramirez noted that Toshiba’s theme for Cloud TV is “a better user experience,” and the new platform includes an enhanced multi-page on-screen interface, peer-to-peer sharing via Miracast and WiDi, a family calendar, photo album, personal messaging, social integration, media guide, tablet interactive gaming and high-quality cloud-based gaming. Cloud TV will be available on Toshiba’s top tier models, including the ultra-slim LED line and the Ultra HD line.
The new TVs will be matched with a line of new Blu-ray players, including one model that features 4K upconversion (model BDX6400) and Cloud TV integration.
The glasses-free 3D TV that Toshiba had shown on two previous occasions at CES was not mentioned and apparently is not part of the company’s current plan.
