Survey: 18% of Holiday Shoppers to Buy HDTV

More than 50% of consumers plan to spend as much or more on electronics during the holiday shopping season, according to ABI Research.

It takes more than a global economic crisis to curb U.S. consumer spending, according to a report by ABI Research.

Holiday consumer electronics spending should remain roughly status quo, based on ABI’s survey of 1,600 households.

"Holidays 2008: Doomsday or Temporary Downturn?" shows that 18 percent of respondents plan on buying an HDTV and that 13 percent plan on spending more on holiday electronics than year's past.

ABI speculates that the anticipated surge in HDTV purchasing is due in part to the upcoming analog-to-digital TV broadcast transition in February 2009.

But it’s not all good news. ABI says only 8 percent of respondents plan to buy Blu-ray players, calling that “disappointing” since Blu-ray players can be had for under $200.

Other key findings:
  • 40% of respondents plan to spend about the same on holiday electronics as in years past
  • 47% of respondents, however, plan to decrease their 2008 holiday electronics spending
ABI's report on anticipated holiday electronics spending contrasts with The NPD Group's report, which indicates consumers intend to spend less due to the economy.

It leads one to speculate who is right.

How will consumer electronics spending fare this holiday shopping season?
