Sony is planning to release ultra-thin OLED TVs in Europe in 2009, reports the Nikkei business daily.
OLEDs are expected to be the next popular technology when it comes to flat-panel TVs. DisplaySearch says OLED TVs will be the fastest-growing application over the next eight years, growing from 200,000 units in 2009 to 2.8 million units in 2012.
Sony began selling the world's first OLED in Japan last year. It also debuted its first OLED in the United States, the XEL-1, at 2008 CES.
Sony teamed with other manufacturers in July to offer affordable OLED TVs. The Japanese government threw in $32 million to help the companies mass produce next-generation OLEDs.
A Sony spokesman says the company is considering launching OLED TVs in Europe but declined to comment on more specific timing.
Europe and North America are the two largest markets for Sony's LCD TVs. DisplaySearch, however, says the North American share of the LCD TV market may drop over the next few years.
