Sony Drops Rear Projection TVs for LCDs and OLEDs
RPTVs caused TV business to lose money through September, Sony says.
Sony has confirmed that it will be dropping its rear projection TV business to focus on LCDs and OLEDs, according to the AP.
Despite increased sales of RPTVs in October -- the highest unit sales since May -- Sony's sales of rear-projection sets have dropped as its LCD business has flourished.
Sony dropped its plasma line in 2006 to focus on its LCD business, which they expect to sell 10 million units of for the fiscal year ending in March. That's up from 6.3 million the previous year, according to the AP.
The RPTV unit caused Sony to lose a significant amount of money through the first-half of the fiscal year, the AP reports:
Sony displayed its OLED sets at CES last year, and recently introduced 11-inch units in Japan.

In the fiscal half-year through September, Sony lost 60 billion yen ($526.3 million) in its TV operations, partly because of losses tied to rear-projection TVs. Diving prices of LCD TVs also contributed to the red ink, [Sony Corp. spokesman Shinji] Obana said.
