Blu-ray to Peak in 5 to 6 Years, Singulus CEO Says

Company expects 50% of households in U.S. to buy Blu-ray player in two years.

Blu-ray sales are expected to reach $409.4 million for 2010, according to the German technology company Singulus.

The company's chief executive officer, Stefan Baustert, says the Blu-ray market will see an operating margin of 10 percent.

"We calculate growth compared to this year," says Baustert.

Baustert adds that the company, which manufactures Blu-ray players, will reach its "maximum delivery amount" in the next five to six years.

The company expects 50 percent of households in the United States to own a Blu-Ray player in two years. It said the same level will not be reached in Germany until 2011 or 2012.

Roger Kay, president of Endpoint Technologies Associates, disagrees with this statement, recently saying Blu-ray sales will drop in the fourth quarter of 2008 and beyond. He says adoption of the format will be pushed back by "video over cable, satellite and the Internet" long enough to close the window of opportunity for Blu-ray.

The Blu-ray price index dropped more than 7 percent in October, according to PriceSCAN.
