Nortek Inc. is consolidating its Linear Audio Video Control properties under one roof in Carlsbad, Calif.

The AVC group was formed in April of this year, combining Niles Audio, Xantech and Elan Home Systems into a more unified entity headed by former Harman executive Mark Terry.

Niles will close its Miami offices by the end of the year. Ditto for Xantech, which will move out of its Sylmar office in Northern Calif. Elan (including the Aton and Sunfire brands) will maintain a small R&D presence in Lexington, Ky., but otherwise will see most of its operations head west. A few employees in Elan’s HomeLogic organization will remain in Marblehead, Mass.

With the move, Nortek is finally realizing the synergies it never delivered in the seven years it has been acquiring manufacturers in the custom electronics industries.

Previously, most of the synergies related to factory sharing in Asia and ad hoc sharing of information and technology among member companies.

Nortek subsidiary Linear -- itself a combination of Linear security, OpenHouse infrastructure products, and M&S intercoms and central vac -- has been located in Carlsbad Calif., for years, serving also as the hub of Nortek’s CE activity.

Now that it will be sharing quarters with the AVC companies, Linear is moving to a brand new 35,000 square-foot facility at 1969 Kellogg Ave. in Carlsbad.

According to a statement released yesterday, about 120 people will remain in the AVC companies. Company officials were not available for an interview, so it is not clear how many jobs will be lost in the move.

Terry, president of Linear AVC, emphasized in the statement, “While this new business model shares many support resources, separate sales, training, customer service, and product teams will remain dedicated to each brand.”

Nortek’s Linear subsidiary also includes SpeakerCraft, Panamax/Furman, LiteTouch, Gefen and Omnimount. These entities appear to be unaffected by Linear AVC’s consolidation. Nortek subsidiary Imerge closed earlier this year.

CE Pro will have more information about the Elan/Niles/Xantech consolidation shortly.
