Netflix streaming on the Nintendo Wii will be disc-based, similar to the PlayStation 3.

The Nintendo Wii, the top-selling gaming system, is adding Netflix streaming in the spring of 2010, the New York Times reports.

No exact date has been given by Nintendo, but the service will come at no additional cost for those who already have a Netflix subscription.

“Our goal is to offer Netflix members as many ways as possible to watch movies and TV episodes streamed from Netflix right to their TVs and to give non-members more and compelling reasons to consider the service,” says Netflix co-founder and CEO Reed Hastings in a statement.

“Joining forces with Nintendo, which has been so immensely popular with consumers since its introduction, is a very meaningful step in that direction.”

The Wii is the third gaming console to offer Netflix streaming behind the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Similar to Netflix streaming on the PS3, Wii owners will need to buy the “instant-streaming” disc from Netflix and have it in the system when they want to watch a movie. Click here for information on how to reserve a disc.

The Wii remote will be able to control Netflix accounts and queues.

Unlike the PS3 and Xbox, the Wii will not support HD streaming video. There has been speculation that Nintendo will launch an HD version of the Wii in 2011.
