Movies Come to Autonomic Media Servers

Demonstrated at CEDIA 2011, streaming video from local and cloud-based sources will be offered via a free firmware upgrade to existing MMS-5 media servers.

Autonomic adds video aggregation and streaming capabilities to the MMS-5 Mirage Media Server (larger image after the video below). Demonstrated at CEDIA Expo 2011.

Autonomic Controls, one of the leaders in music management – both local and cloud-based -- has added video to its content aggregation and streaming systems.

During CEDIA Expo 2011, Autonomic principal Michael de Nigris demonstrated the company’s MMS-5 media server streaming movies from both local sources and online services. As with the audio capabilities of the server, the video engine aggregates the content for easy search, navigation and control.

“We’ve promised this for a long time,” says de Nigris.

The first iteration of the Autonomic music/movie server will find any video content stored locally – on a computer, NAS drive or other storage device – as well as any media on iTunes.

“Any content that you can play on iTunes, you can play on this,” says de Nigris.

He pooh-poohs the notion that iTunes video is not appropriate for the big screen. With the probability that Apple will eventually produce a display line, “it would be hard to believe they would ship a 1080p TV without producing 1080p content,” he says.

The video functionality will be released later this year or early 2012, says de Nigris. Autonomic’s MMS-5 servers will be field-upgradeable to support the service.

Autonomic has released an amazing marketing video that helps consumers understand the virtues of content aggregation and streaming. In it, says principal Michael de Nigris, "We identified key frustrations and ways we have eliminated them. ... This is a concerted effort to help dealers advance their cause." Check out the Autonomic video here.
In a genius marketing move, Autonomic is providing the update for free on existing Mirage MMS-5 servers, but once the service is released, all new video-capable servers will carry premium pricing.

“The problem is that when companies introduce new products, dealers stop buying legacy products,” says de Nigris.

This approach gives dealers and their customers the chance to have the best of both worlds – an audio server/streamer now, and an easy upgrade path for video on the future.

“So get it now,” de Nigris advises.

After the release, the audio-only server will be called the MMS-5A, and the video-capable product will be the MMS-5AV.

New OSD for Media Servers

While Autonomic offers rich user interfaces for virtually all of the major control systems -- as well as iPads, PCs and other generic devices – the company has never had its own on-screen display for navigating content via the TV screen.

At CEDIA, Autonomic demonstrated its first OSD (watch video), which allows users to find, select and stream content using a simple handheld remote.

For a long time, Autonomic has offered an on-screen display for “currently playing” tunes, de Nigris explains, “but we haven’t actually had a way to navigate content on-screen.”

The new interface will become especially important for navigating video content when that feature is released.
