Mitsubishi Offers 3D Demo Kit for Showrooms

Includes 3D content, glasses and buttons to toggle between 2D and 3D.

Mitsubishi has about 150 3D demo stations in showrooms across the country. The unit includes 3D content, glasses and buttons so viewers can toggle between 2D and 3D.

Mitsubishi is trying to make it easier for integrators to sell 3D technology by offering a stand-alone 3D demo station and PC hardware with 3D content designed for showrooms.

The stand includes four pairs of rechargeable 3D glasses that are tethered to the stand. The stand also includes two buttons: one for 3D and one for 2D so the viewer can change the TV to either mode. It is packaged with a PC that includes built-in demo loops of:
  • 3D movies like "Ice Age" and "Coraline"
  • Live action sequences
  • Gaming clips from "Tomb Raider" and others
The demo kit can be used with any Mitsubishi 3D television. The demo kit ($2,100) even includes a built-in set of wet wipes for cleaning the Nvidia glasses, which can run about 60 hours on one charge.

David Naranjo, director of business development for Mitsubishi TV, says the company has about 150 stands in the field being used by dealers. The unit was recently on display at Stereo Exchange in New York City.

"People have a well-deserved, negative perception of 3D. They need to be convinced," Naranjo says. "Mitsubishi is doing what it can, including offering these demo stands, to change that negative perception."

I was at the Stereo Exchange Press Event, and while the 2D/3D stand and glasses were there, only the glasses worked.

The 2D/3D button was not working, and while talking with a perspective customer, we both tried to switch between the settings, but to no avail!

So what good is the great 3D demo server (and demo stand) if you can’t switch between settings?

Here is my review of the event:
