Manufacturers Weigh in on iPad
Manufacturers share their thoughts on how the iPad will affect home automation.
Will the home automation industry be forever changed with tomorrow's introduction of the iPad?
Can Apple make home automation more mainstream?
How will the iPad affect pricing of touchscreens?
To shed some light on these questions and others, we asked home automation manufacturers: "What are your thoughts about the iPad?"
Here's what they had to say.

"iPad will have marginal impact. Netbooks have been out for a while and are cheap. Touch screen interfaces have also been around for a while."

"While we believe that the iPad is a revolutionary product, we believe this is just the beginning for larger-screened touch tablets. This transition will signal a next-generation of home remote control and visualization."

"Just like the iPod touch/ iPhone the iPad will change the way end users are thinking. The extreme low price point will be a reference and will therefore put pressure on the custom install price levels. iPad will definitely find its way with C.I. as a low cost entry level home control touch pad, complementary to more optimal, dedicated control solutions.
"We foresee to use it as an alternative and complimentary user interface to our control systems; and think it will help increase business for the industry as a whole."

“Consumers want the devices in their home to be integrated and easy to use. The Control4 Operating System is designed to do just that. Many of our customers use touch screens to access their Control4 system and the iPad is a great platform that meets the needs of many homeowners for exactly this task. We think the iPad is an important platform for homeowners looking for a smarter home and believe that when combined with Control4 My Home we will continue to push forward the mainstream adoption of affordable home control technologies that make our lives easier.”

"An industry game changer! The days of making margins on expensive touchpanels are winding down. This is a fundamentally different business model that we all have to adapt to."

"Crestron Mobile Pro, currently available on the AppStore, is supported by the new Apple iPad(R). Mobile Pro enables full control and real-time status display of all AV devices, lighting, HVAC control, shades and security from one app, turning iPad into a virtual Crestron touchpanel."

"The introduction of the iPad is good news for the home automation market. Any device that broadens interest in whole-home automation and simplifies users’ access to it presents a tremendous opportunity for the industry. AMX has been an advocate of open-standards based platforms allowing for simpler technology integration and greater user choice. The iPad is complementary to AMX technology and will make a good adjunct interface for accessing home control systems.
