Do You Have the Right People in Place?

How can integrators conduct a proper evaluation of their talent pool? CEDIA Management Conference educational sessions will use “Mastering the Rockefeller Habits” to provide integrators with tangible advice.

Do you have the right people in place at your company, and are they doing the right job?

If you are like most CE pros, the answer to this question is a resounding "No." That was the case at Architectural Electronics in Winter Park, Fla. where owner Peter Shipp realized he needed to evaluate his entire 5-employee operation, including himself.

"While looking at my employees and my operation, I had to make some revelations about what I should be doing," he admits. "Am I good salesman? manager? project manager? I determined that I am not a good operations person. I am disorganized. I hate dealing with human relations issues."

As a result, Shipp hired a general manager with a corporate background. He also migrated an office manager into a graphic design position, and let go an under-performing technician. "To succeed and grow, I need all my employees to be A players," he comments. The exercise is all part of Shipp's goal to eventually grow his company into a large regional or even national installation company.

The guidebook for Shipp's personnel evaluation process is the best-selling book by Verne Harnish, "Mastering the Rockefeller Habits." The themes of the book are a central part of the upcoming CEDIA 2010 Management Conference in New Orleans from March 3-6. Early bird registration pricing ends February 1.

Like Shipp, many integrators wear the hat of president, salesperson, designer, installer, project manager and chief bottle washer. There simply are not enough hours in the day to do all that and build your brand, boost your profit and manage employees with the enthusiasm of Tommy Lasorda.

That's one reason CEDIA is drawing on the book as a guide for the conference at the Omni Royal Orleans hotel. The program will focus on the four key decisions that all growth companies must get right: people, strategy, execution and profit.

What Are the Rockefeller Habits?

Most of the conference's sessions will help attendees apply the Rockefeller Habits. Attendees will participate in several breakout sessions that target each of the four key decision areas. Other important questions to ask include:
