Couple Buys Shattered LCD at Circuit City
A Massachusetts couple learned the hard way after purchasing a Samsung LCD TV for $1,100.
When they opened the box at home, they realized the display was shattered. Not a crack, nick or ding. Shattered.
Because "all sales are final," Circuit City will not refund the couple's money.
"They said, 'Sorry, your problem, not ours," the frustrated woman told WCVB-TV in Boston.
You're probably wondering why the couple didn't check the TV before buying it? Well, some stores aren't allowing consumers to open any boxes.
WCVB claims to have found signs that read "Check your purchase" and "Don't open the merchandise" at the same store.
This isn't an isolated incident. According to the Consumerist, a family in Minnesota paid $1,500 for a shattered TV.
The Massachusetts couple is hoping their credit card company will help them fight the purchase.
Good luck.

What do these people expect? They rush to a store and wait in a line with the rest of the herd for a “deal” on a product and know going in all sales are final. Then have the nerve to complain that their product was broken upon purchase. How about shopping at stores that are NOT in liquidation sales, or at least not buying an $1,100 to $1,500 TV without being able to return it if something is wrong. Idiots.
The signs WCVB claims to have seen make the whole operation sketchy. I won’t go as far as bad mouthing people who shop there, but it’s probably not the smartest thing to do if there are signs saying you can’t open and check the merchandise in the store. But, again, that’s just bad business and is why Circuit City is where it is.
How does an LCD “shatter”? Is the back light tube broken?
The whole story sounds sensationalistic.
Stand out front with your broken LCD and tell everyone on there way in. The store might rethink about refunding your money.
Yet another reason to buy from a custom retailer!
Amazing that this customer is shocked about CC not willing to exchange the set. Guess they must have missed all those signs posted in the store stating “All Sales Final, No Refunds or Exchanges”. Either that or:
A: They are blind
B: Don’t understand plain English
C: Willing to get what they think is a deal at a
high risk
This is why I got out of dealing with the public. They just don’t get it! By the way, custom retailers can be just as bad. Trust me.
Gee… I am utterly shocked that their purchase from a bankrupt & insolvent entity did not turn out well.
What are the odds of that??
And eyes will roll in 3…..2…..1….
Circuit City can’t refund the $ because the product is being sold by liquidators not CC.
Also, if a tv (plasma) is shattered, you would HEAR IT when you move it. And they won’t allow you to open the boxes until purchased.
Some people are just plain idiots and deserve to get a broken tv.
Yes LCD TV’S can be damaged in the box and not be able to see it on the box.
Broken lcd panels are very common. they should be inspected at time of purchase.
cc sucks anyway, and the sales people in this stores do not care about the compony or the customers, wich brings us to the fallof the giant.
timber!!!!!!!!!
Had the same BS happen to me…. borders on criminal… sold me TV as new, sealed in box… got it home, screen was cracked all the way across, owners manual/remote missing… i understand all sales final but blatantly lying about the status of an item is insane.
You were supposed to check the merchandise at a station at the front, the other signs mean don’t open every freaking unopened box on the floor. Great journalism from that Boston station citing the Consumerist for information. That’s liking asking citing Ann Coulter on how Barak Obama’s doing. Solid reporting.

Ha Ha!
