CEA Reacts to California TV Ban
"CEA is extremely disappointed in the CEC's decision to regulate TV energy use. Simply put, this is bad policy—dangerous for the California economy, dangerous for technology innovation and dangerous for consumer freedom. Instead of allowing customers to choose the products they want, the Commission has decided to impose arbitrary standards that will hamper innovation and limit consumer choice. It will result in higher prices for consumers, job losses for Californians, and lost tax revenue for the state.
"The CEC's actions over the past year demonstrate that this regulatory process is broken. The commissioners repeatedly rebuffed attempts from the CE industry to provide input or correct the litany of errors and flawed assumptions upon which these misguided regulations are based. With tax revenues and jobs at risk, the citizens of California deserve a more reasoned and fact-based approach to regulation. The Commission has ignored the concerns of small business owners and consumers who will be adversely impacted by these regulations and the detrimental effect they will have on California's job market and economy.
"Energy efficiency is a shared concern for all parties. In fact, the consumer electronics industry has led the effort to reduce energy usage by with innovative, energy-efficient products, and consumers have responded with increased demand for these products. The industry has been so successful, that in the last two years alone energy efficiency of televisions has improved by 41 percent. But rather than build on these efforts, the CEC chose to create a new regulatory regime and micromanage the design and development of future televisions."
"We will continue to pursue legislative and legal solutions to ensure that California citizens will not suffer the consequences of this misguided policy."

I thought I would check the state’s largest newspaper to see how big the public outcry (or support) is for this decision. Guess what… no one cares!
Alas… as you can see below… the top story that interests the public relates to the new Twilight movie, and Number 2 is a commentary about Sarah Palin’s former son-in-law Levi Johnston and how “hot” he is.
My gosh, the Number 5 story is one about a guy who sells fried churros in between traffic lanes. The story on the big-screen ban is number 9.
Conclusion… the California Energy Commission might have done the right thing, and Californian’s are really, really apathetic.

What has happened here is people trying to strike a balance. On the product side this move will spark innovation on the consumer side it will mostly go unnoticed unless the product companies market their advances as green. The entire nation will benefit from this bold move because companies will not sell CA models only in CA, they will sell them everywhere and those quickest to react will benefit. Look beyond the consumer, the retailers win too as this will have an impact on their costs to run stores, afterall their power draw comes across the entire day and are not able to play the “save money by only using this after 8pm” game. What could this push companies to do? maybe add solar modules to products to offset standby power needs using available room light, new lcd and led technology that has been in development finally gets a venue to flurish, suppliers that simply rebadge products from overseas might find it difficult to compete and thus reduce the confusion felt by consumers as they try to understand it all. This might be the first push, but expect other catagories to be targets as well…routers…modems…pc….phones…ect.
What about graphics cards on computers? Can we still rock out to 700 watts? Better stock up on toys while I still can. Sounds like electronics will be getting a pricing makeover some time in the near future.
If Californian’s want to regulate TV energy use, why not stop taping and broadcasting the Jay Leno Show and do the entire country a favor?
This is kind of like making hybrid cars, Its still a car….Causing all the same conventional problems. You can put a hybrid band aid on it, but its still a pollution causing, freeway creating piece of machinery. The comment about the Jay Leno show is similar to the idea that roads are created for cars( car manufacturers, and parts suppliers) convenience not the humans well being. Pointing out the fundamental issue of programming being catered towards large energy consuming devices, call them Tv’s, routers…modems…pc….phones…ect.
If there was no programming for these large Tv’s( Jay Leno) to display, they would cease to exist and simultaniously stop polluting consumption.
Good luck trying to get this Genie back in the bottle. The people have spoken, they want their cake, and by goodness there going to eat it to, band aided and all. Standards have fallen, more drastically in recent months…
Is California no longer a part of the USA? Appears not. Wait, I am not sure ANY state is part of the USA given the road to socialism, marxism and facism that we are on.
Vote them ALL out next year and get this country back on the right path. If I want to drive a vehicle that gets 12 MPG and has a 60” plasma in the back, then thats exactly what I should have the freedom to do.
Good, no more plasmas! good thing the earth has been warming the last decade (insert sarcastic roll of eyes hear). Proven FACTS clearly show the earth has actually COOLED over the last decade. But dont tell the socialist, er um, I mean liberals anything about TRUTH as it interferes with the goal of 100% of control and the destruction of capitalism (unless of course it benefits them behind close doors).
I say kick California out.

The CEA can whine all they want, but manufacturers will cooperate by creating more efficient displays, and our environment and utility bills will be that much happier for it.
