When Jack Joseph Puig, a Grammy-winning music producer, asses a new piece of audio equipment, he considers the emotional connection to music just as much as traditional elements such as frequency reproduction and dynamics.
“My playlist is big on variety and it includes a number of popular recordings,” he says. “Some of the recordings are compressed, some are not; some were made with old gear and some were with new gear. This list represents new and old technologies, as well as older and newer recording eras.”
Puig says an audio system should faithfully reproduce the artists’ intent of what the music should sound like. “Audiophile to me means a system that is incredible to listen to with music,” he explains. “It’s not about high fidelity or low fidelity … it’s about fidelity period. It’s all about producing the feeling the artists intended, and that to me is Hi-Fi.”
