As one of the innovators in the high-performance, high-SPL home theater market, Paul Hales has proven he can design powerful audio systems. With the launch Theory Audio Design, Hales proves he is capable of developing home-friendly systems.
Theory Audio Design officially launched at CEDIA Expo 2019 and during the recently completed trade event, Hales demonstrated the performance standard set by his signature Pro Audio Technology brand hasn’t fallen far from the tree with his latest company.
Theory Audio Design enters the market with a choice of soundbars, subwoofers and complimentary in-room speakers to facilitate the installation of everything from big immersive audio systems, to small-footprint stereo systems.
Why Choose Theory Audio Design?
Applying his three decades of engineering experience to the development of the Theory Audio Design product line, Hales points out the heart of his new brand is the Amplified Loudspeaker Controller (ALC-1809).
The ALC-1809 is described as a “Swiss Army Knife” solution that delivers up to 1,800-watts per system and 32-bit/96kHz of digital signal processing (DSP).

Hales notes the ALC-1809 essentially serves as five products: A multichannel DSP processor, a multichannel amplifier, a whole-house audio amplifier, a multichannel mixing amplifier, a multichannel bass manager, and a high-resolution loudspeaker processor.
Through the ability to mix-and-match components, Hales says integrators can create a wealth of systems that blend into any home decor.
“Theory is really a sister company to Pro Audio Technology. Where we’re bringing the same philosophy—design philosophy and sonic philosophy—into soundbars and small, compact on-wall speakers and architectural products, at much lower price points; much more visually attractive designed to be seen, but with the same thrilling dynamics people expect from Pro Audio Technology,” explains Hales.
“So, what we are showing here is three soundbars. We have a 65-inch size, a 75-inch size and an 85-inch size. What I mean by that is they are sized to match 65-inch TVs, 75-inch TVs and 85-inch TVs. Then we have the sb25 multipurpose loudspeaker. It can be used for distributed audio, surround applications—it is a fantastic high-end stereo speaker.
“At the nucleus of all Theory systems is the loudspeaker controller. You can think of it as a multichannel amplifier with a whole bunch of DSPs inside to do all of the processing, and there is a bunch of additional tools for the integrators to use to customize the sound of a room.”
