Walmart, Vudu Ripping DVDs to the Cloud
Grant Clauser | 03/14 07:10 AM,

Walmart wants to be your movie server in the cloud, the digital bin where users store all DVDs for access on all Internet-connected devices. Walmart, in conjunction with Vudu, has launched an in-store program that turns DVDs into digital cloud-stored copies which, presumably, would be accessible over tablets, smartphones, smart TVs and more. Walmart acquired Vudu in Feb. 2010. Walmart, which has support from major movie studios such as Fox, Paramount, Sony, Universal and Warner Bros., the service will launch on April 16, 2012 in 3,500 stores. The back catalogs…

TiVo reported the winners of its third annual Battle of the Consumer Electronics Brands at CES. For the first time ever, Walmart unseated Best Buy for the top spot among retailers. Walmart had the lowest fast-forward rate compared to all the other retailers with ads running on broadcast and cable. Walmart scored the lowest fast-forward rate on ABC, where it allocated 20 percent of its broadcast schedule. Walmart's "Man carries big check" spot scored a significantly lower fast-forward rate than the top spots aired by Target, Kmart and Best Buy.…

Vudu & Walmart Movie Cards are ‘Stupid, Overpriced’
Julie Jacobson | 06/17 08:46 AM,

Image: Engadget Did you hear the one about driving to Walmart to buy a "movie card" that you take home and then enter a code into the computer so you can stream a movie? It's true! Walmart is selling the $14.96 digital movie cards for Sony's Battle: Los Angeles for enjoyment through the Vudu streaming movie service, acquired by Walmart last year. It all makes perfectly good sense in the press release, right? “Digital movie cards are a great way for Walmart’s millions of movie customers to own and watch…

Vudu Adds More TV Shows, Not All HD
Rachel Cericola | 05/04 11:17 AM,

Wal-Mart didn’t buy Vudu for nothing. The retailer seems ready to compete with Netflix and other streaming services, announcing that Vudu is adding more TV shows in its lineup. Starting today, you can watch shows such as "Glee," "Modern Family" and "Nurse Jackie." You can also catch up on "Weeds," "Bones" and "Gossip Girl." If the lineup seems sort of random, well, it is. But you have to start somewhere, right? We’re just sad it's not starting completely in HD. After peeking through the lineup, we see that not every…

Best Buy, LG, Kindle Have Most-Watched TV Commercials
Jason Knott | 01/12 09:58 AM,

TiVo's second annual "Battle of the Consumer Electronics Brands" report, which was released at CES 2011, ranks the consumer electronics manufacturers with the best TV commercials. In the Retail Outlets category, Best Buy beat out Walmart, Target, Kmart and Sears for the second year in a row. Best Buy experienced 15 percent to 30 percent less overall fast-forwarding of its commercials than each of the other four mass merchants. Similar percentages held true for its time-shifted commercials and prime time commercials. In the E-Readers/Tablets category, the Kindle beat the Apple…

Best Buy’s Marketshare Down 1.1%: Good or Bad News?
Jason Knott | 12/15 07:07 AM,
1 Comment
Best Buy has lost 1.1 percent of the marketshare in electronics sales nationwide and its quarterly earnings were unexpectedly down for the fiscal third quarter. That news, along with softer TV and gaming sales, caused Best Buy's stock price to tumble by more than 15 percent on Tuesday, its largest drop in eight years, according to MarketWatch. But are the struggles for Best Buy good or bad for CE pros? Five years ago, custom installers would have been happy about a problem at "big blue." But today, if Best Buy…

DIY Didn’t Work, So I Turned to Walmart
Julie Jacobson | 06/24 06:31 AM,
15 Comments
When I take off my CE Pro editor's hat, I'm just like everyone else. I had a task that was slightly out of my comfort zone, but I thought I could do it myself. After all, YouTube makes it look so easy. Alas, after a good 20 minutes of effort, I finally gave up trying to take the stitches out of my right elbow using some nail clippers. So I turned to the experts at my local big-box retailer, where the nearby Stillwater Medical Group runs The Clinic at Walmart.…

Onkyo to Sell Through Walmart.com
Steve Crowe | 05/18 01:06 PM,

Onkyo will start selling home audio products through Walmart.com in the coming weeks, reports Twice. Twice, which cites an "email to sales reps and key accounts," says Walmart will sell 12 home audio products from Onkyo, including select receivers. The products will not be available for in-store pickup. Onkyo already sells select products online through Best Buy and other sites. And Walmart, which just last week announced plans to expand its technology offerings with "more high quality internet-ready home entertainment products," also sells Sony and Teac receivers. In the email,…

Report: Amazon and Walmart Take Bites Out of Best Buy
Tom LeBlanc | 01/17 12:20 PM,
5 Comments
Ever since Circuit City closed in early 2009, electronics retailers have been trying to nibble at its market share. All that biting has taken a toll on U.S. No. 1 electronics retailer Best Buy, according to a survey by Retrevo. Best Buy announced solid performance for the fiscal month of December ended January 2, 2010 — 13 percent overall growth and 8.2 percent comparable store sales increase. Retrevo’s survey, however, shows a shift in consumer perception that threatens to shrink Best Buy’s market share. The beneficiaries appear to be Amazon…

If you buy a PC at Walmart.com during the holidays, you can get free technical support services -- such as virus removal, free anitivirus software, remote diagnostics and repairs – through Walmart partner iYogi, headquartered in India. The offer is a promotion by iYogi, which is trying to expand its reach in the U.S. consumer market, Dow Jones reports. The free service, valued at $100, also includes Windows 7 migration. "We're anticipating Windows 7 is going to drive a lot of sales," iYogi co-founder Vishal Dhar told Dow Jones. Outside…
