With the dust still settling on the departure of SpeakerCraft president Jeremy Burkhardt, Nortek has announced that SpeakerCraft, along with Proficient and Panamax/Furman, will be integrated into the AVC Group, which already includes Niles Audio, Elan Home Systems, Xantech, Aton, and Sunfire. Mark Terry, president of AVC Group, will leave the Carlsbad, Calif.-based company. Imagining a SpeakerCraft without Jeremy Burkhardt
Julie Jacobson | 05/22 02:05 PM,

Jeremy Burkhardt once held a CEDIA press conference with half-naked ladies dancing about -- the same scantily clad ladies that shook their thangs at the SpeakerCraft booth on the show floor. He threw a circus-themed party with an AC/DC KISS tribute band comprised of dwarves. He had video games made that let us whack him on the head and launch him into a mine field. He had a lot of tattoos and he wasn't afraid to show them. For the CE Pro 100 Summit, Jeremy bought the big sponsorship which…

Jeremy Burkhardt Leaves SpeakerCraft, Nortek
Julie Jacobson | 05/22 09:43 AM,
19 Comments
The most colorful personality in the home systems business, Jeremy Burkhardt, is leaving SpeakerCraft, a subsidiary of Nortek Inc. (Nasdaq: NTK). Called a "retirement" by Nortek, Burkhardt's departure is effective May 25. Keith Marshall, president of SpeakerCraft spinoff Proficient Audio, has been named interim president. In a brief interview with CE Pro following the announcement, Burkhardt says, "I'll probably go off and travel, find another company I like and be a renegade again." And in what may be the understatement of the year, he notes, "I'm not so good at…

SpeakerCraft Kills Nirv Multiroom AV/Control System
Julie Jacobson | 04/30 09:40 AM,
52 Comments
SpeakerCraft -- a subsidiary of Nortek, Inc (Nasdaq: NTK). -- has abandoned its Nirv multiroom audio, video and control system after spending four years on the project. Nirv was to be a whole-house A/V system requiring only a single Cat 5 cable to deliver content and two-way control using CobraNet networking technology. While home automation was a key element of the original system, announced in 2009, SpeakerCraft backed off of that feature to focus on multiroom audio and video. “Nortek is working very hard to better integrate all of its…

Atlantic Tech to License H-PAS Bass Technology to SpeakerCraft
Jason Knott | 02/14 07:33 AM,
0 Comments
Atlantic Technology has signed an agreement with SpeakerCraft to collaborate in the development of new loudspeaker systems using Atlantic's H-PAS bass configuration technology. Through the application of H-PAS technology, SpeakerCraft will be able to provide its customers with loudspeakers that will deliver deeper and smoother bass in much smaller cabinets than was previously possible. The agreement will result in the development of several new SpeakerCraft products expected to come to market starting later this year and beyond. H-PAS, or Hybrid Pressure Acceleration System, is a unique enclosure configuration that combines…

ISE 2012 attracted more than 40,000 attendees during the three-day event that recently concluded at the Amsterdam RAI. The commercial- and residential-focused trade show also saw the number of exhibitors increase 15 percent to 825 in the 11 halls of the Amsterdam RAI. And with more exhibitors comes more products and more, well, interesting sights. I don't have a "best of" list, but here I've rounded up some of the more interesting products on display at ISE 2012, as well as a few notable happenings. Click here for ISE 2012:…

SpeakerCraft Nirv IP Multiroom A/V System Hits Field
Julie Jacobson | 01/30 01:14 PM,
18 Comments
Well, it took a few years, but the IP-enabled Nirv multiroom A/V system from SpeakerCraft is now shipping to a limited number of dealers. Several installations have been completed. “It’s unlike anything else SpeakerCraft has done,” says Nirv product manager Dan Kippycash. He doesn’t mean the product, necessarily, but the rollout. It is happening very slowly, with a handful of dealers getting access to the line - 33 are now certified - and the manufacturer participating in many of the early installations. “We’re not trying to do it too fast,”…

JJ’s Takeaways from CEDIA 2011
Julie Jacobson | 11/14 10:18 AM,
2 Comments
CEDIA Expo 2011 was two months ago, but the innovations from the event are still fresh. While there were some mind-blowing products like Sony's affordable 4K projector, there were also some more modest developments that signify industry trends: Return of the touchscreens iPad and Android tablets were all over the show floor, as usual, but that doesn’t signify the end of the dedicated touchscreen. Seems they’re actually enjoying a comeback, even in the middle market. Both Control4 and URC introduced new 7-inch touchpanels that look like sleek tablets but act…

SpeakerCraft at CEDIA: All Speakers, Some Nirv
Julie Jacobson | 09/29 07:44 AM,
22 Comments
This year at CEDIA Expo 2011, SpeakerCraft touted two completely opposite speaker lines: one that disappears completely behind the walls and another that is in-your-face and designed to be seen. The latter is the Roots line which takes SpeakerCraft back to its -- wait for it -- roots. The high-gloss brightly-colored bookshelf speakers and subs look like they’re from the 1970s, when SpeakerCraft was born. And that’s a good thing because these days retro is in. So is good sound. “I became a vinyl junkie and obsessed with two-channel audio,”…

SpeakerCraft Profile Series speakers
Robert Archer | 08/19 03:02 AM,
For decades The California audio company SpeakerCraft has designed and manufactured a variety of speaker and amplification products for the specialty electronics market. The company's latest product release is the Profile Series and it's designed to complement the interior look of today's American home, while utilizing technologies from its well known AIM and CRS lines of products. Highlighting the speakers' functionality is the use of neodymium magnets that attach the products' flangless grilles to enable their flush appearance once they are installed. SpeakerCraft says the line has launched with eight…
