Savant Systems LLC, a manufacturer of Apple-based home automation and commercial control system has announced the introduction of its newly revised Savant University training resource for integrators. The Cape Cod-based company says the dealer education program combines both classroom and online learning programs. Savant has adapted the BlueVolt learning management system for enhanced usability and course access. Normally it takes years for musicians and recording professionals to develop their listening skills. Having these listening skills helps musicians to identify chord changes, keys and chord voicings, and on the recording side of the music industry, having a finely tuned ear enables recording engineers to identify specific frequencies and changes in equalization. Audiofile Engineering's Quiztones software learning tools may not help audiophiles and electronics professionals to expedite the development of their listening skills, but it will help them to gain easy access to a set of learning tools to… View this story

There are few companies that can match the experience and expertise that URC brings to the control and automation category, and now with the release of its new iPhone/iPad Total Control app its applying its years research and development (R&D) to a new genre within the control market: Apple iOS-based control. URC's new Total Control iPhone/iPad is engineered to provide users with full control of a URC Total Control system. The N.Y.-based company designed the app to mimic the look and feel of its TKP-2000 In-Wall Two-Way Network Touchscreen, including… View this story

Get ready for BlackBerry Tablet OS, the potential new Android and iPad killer from Research in Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM). During CES 2011, RIM demonstrated its first implementation of the OS, the new 7-inch BlackBerry PlayBook. But for a lack of apps -- a biggie, of course -- the PlayBook easily beats iPad and definitely gives Android-based tablets a run for the money. Speaking of money, PlayBook will retail for "less than $500". So, probably $499.99. The BlackBerry Tablet OS is powered by the lightweight, heavy-duty QNX Neutrino architecture. Acquired by… View this story

Getting serial commands to and from iPhones, iPads and other iOS devices isn’t terribly new. The trouble is that most existing solutions require users to jailbreak the device. Not so with Redpark Development Development, whose serial cables were created under Apple’s “Made for iPod” program. The company explains that its just-released cables and companion iOS apps are ideal for serial devices such as point-of-sale kiosks, scientific instrumentation, industrial process control equipment, networking equipment, and devices used in home and office automation. We imagine it could be useful for product diagnostics… View this story

With the widely accepted iOS platform from Apple, the proliferation of iPads, and now the invasion of the Android tablets, we are mourning the days of true profit from dedicated home-control touchpanels. These new touchscreen-enabled devices are certainly cheaper and arguably more elegant than the current crop of touchpanels in the CE pro channel. And with inexpensive control apps, they can be just as capable. Several niche home-control developers, such as Control UI, are offering control apps for iOS, Android and Blackberry platforms, making our customers and us wonder if… View this story

Over the past three years, Apple and its iOS have completely disrupted the home automation business, bringing affordable, multipurpose machines to an industry built on higher-priced, single-purpose touchscreens. This week at CEDIA Expo 2010, the big event for custom electronics professionals, home systems integrators will be scouring the show floor for new iOS controls apps; iPad mounts, docks and smart sleeves; competitive products that stack up to the iPad in terms of price, performance and aesthetics; and business models for this enigmatic platform. And, quietly, the relatively new Android platform… View this story

Savant, like many other engineering firms making Apple apps, is conducting its due diligence on Apple's new iOS 4.1 operating platform. In an effort to protect its ROSIE customers and its integrators, the company had issued a memo to its dealer base advising them to halt upgrades on a temporary basis while the company fully vetted the new Apple upgrade. No problems or glitches with any Savant systems in the field were reported with the new system from authorized Savant dealers, but the Osterville, Mass.-based wanted to conduct its standard… View this story
