Universal Remote Control (URC) created quite the stir at this year's just concluded CEDIA show when it introduced a line of multirooom audio equipment. Flying under the radar however, was the company's introduction of a new line if IP surveillance cameras that can be combined with the company's control devices.

The company says the new IP cameras can be controlled with its line of Total Control remotes, keypads and touchscreens, as well as from any Web browser to allow for long distance, remote access. URC adds the cameras are also designed for a variety of applications, which include wired and wireless installations, and they are supported with a full line of accessories to enable installers to place them nearly anywhere.

Summarizing the three cameras, URC says the MC-70VC offers a CMOS sensor, a 4~10,000 Lux operation, live video up to 30fps at a VGA resolution and an optional PoE adapter for unique installations. The MC-73CB is described as a box-like camera and the last of the three cameras is the MC-75CD, which the company says is built with a vandal-proof, weatherproof dome that allows installers to use it outdoors. Both the MC-73CB and the MC-75CB incorporate Super HAD CCD sensors, D1 resolutions (720x480) at 30fps and are usable in situations such as .03 Lux for color and 0.002 Lux for mono feeds.

In the grand scheme of things it may gratuitous to technology critics, but to those who appreciate the convenience of home control and automation, the ability to automate a home's door locks is an invaluable luxury that can be helpful to those with hectic family schedules.

Baldwin Hardware's new Keyless Entry with Home Connect line of deadbolt locks provides homeowners with the ability to wirelessly lock and unlock their homes' doors.

To enable the remote functionality of the line, the Lake Forest Calif.-based company implements the ZigBee Pro wireless protocol, and through the use of this technology, installers can use the locks with home control and automation system solutions from Control4. When used with the Control4 platform, installers can setup customized scenes to turn on or off lights in conjunction with the locking and unlocking of the Keyless home locks.

Baldwin backs the products with its Lifetime finish protection, and 128-bit encryption technologies to protect the locks' eight digit security codes.

Adding to its line of video surveillance products, the Valencia, Calif.-based security products manufacturer Vitek Industrial Video Products, Inc., has just introduced its new CHRONO Series DVR.

This newly released DVR incorporates the latest H.264 video compression technologies with built-in data redundancy, direct connect POS and real-time recording and playback capabilities.

In the field CE Pros can also utilize the DVR's system setup wizard and graphical user interface (GUI) to help expedite the installation process, and the California company offers the product in 8-channel and 16-channel configurations with as much as 6TBs of internal storage.

With the introduction of its CEN-SWPOE-24 24-port managed 10/100 Ethernet switch with Power over Ethernet (PoE) and dual Gigabit uplink ports, Crestron is providing its dealers with a device that simplifies the installation process.

The switch configures through the use of a web browser and Crestron's Toolbox dealer program, and with it installers can implement a system that integrates a variety of networkable components like touchpanels and keypads without having to add power supplies.

In addition, Crestron includes a front panel management port that enables the mirroring of any rear port to facilitate system monitoring and troubleshooting. Installers can also customize the front panel with unique names to make it easy to identify each port.

With Apple, Inc. continuing to innovate on the mainstream level of consumer electronics, its products are finding ways into the specialty custom electronics market through the industry's acceptance of its hardware and software solutions.

The latest company adopting Apple's technologies to drive the use of its custom-oriented product line is Remote Technologies Incorporated (RTI). RTI's new RTiPanel App for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad enables users to control their RTI XP series of remote processor components, including the Minn.-based company's flagship XP-8 processor and its XP-6 and XP-3 products.

RTI says installers can configure the customizable user interface by using its Integration Designer programming software to facilitate the control of their clients' A/V, HVAC, security and home automation devices.

Honeywell is one of the most popular manufacturers in the worlds of residential and commercial security. Recently the N.Y.-based company added to its 5800PIR line of products when it rolled out two new sensors.

The newly released 5800PIR and 5800PIR-COM are said to offer electronics professionals the opportunity to increase their recurring monthly revenues (RMRs) and commercial installation potential.

Honeywell says the 5800PIR incorporates all of the same features as the base model sensor and it adds a cold temperature alert that warns building occupants when temperatures fall below 45 degrees. The company adds the sensor can be combined with its Total Connect Remote Services option to provide dealers to provide more RMR opportunities.

The 5800PIR-COM offers property owners long-range sensor capabilities (60 feet x 80 feet or 100 feet by 20 feet), and it can operate in unheated environments as cold as -4 degrees.

It sounds like science fiction, but the technology is real and New Orleans-based Home Automation Inc. (HAI) is using it for its latest product: the HAI wireless Driveway Sensor (63A00-1).

The technology is of course the earth's magnetic field and in the case of this new driveway sensor the company is utilizing it as a means to detect metal objects like cars to help alert homeowners when a visitor has driven onto their property.

Installers can set the sensor up to turn on outdoor lighting or it can be used as part of a home security system when it's combined with a video surveillance system.

HAI says that because the unit is wireless, installers won't have to dig a channel to run underground cable, and through its industrial design, the company has provided installation options for post or wall mounting applications.

For years installers have offered Home Automation Inc.'s (HAI) line of home control and automation solutions as an affordable, reliable control solution for cost-conscious homeowners.

The company is now finalizing its new Apple iPhone/iPod Touch application and it is set to demonstrate the control solution at the upcoming EHX Show in Orlando (March 25-27).

The app can be used to operate an HAI control system and it uses color graphics and icons to help users navigate their control options to set the parameters for features like lighting, HVAC and A/V system volume. The app is compatible with the company's Omni and Lumina control systems, and it says the interface looks similar to its Snap-Link Mobile and WL3 products.

Honeywell has added new video capabilities to its Total Connect Remote Services.

In addition to remote control capabilities and notifications, Total Connect now integrates with IP cameras that employ video analytics enabling customers to receive event-driven e-mails with video clips when something of interest has been triggered by cameras.

Video e-mails can be received on Web-enabled devices such as laptops, desktops and most new cell phones as well as BlackBerry, Apple iPhone and iPod touch products. The system allows consumers to use the Apple iPhone or iPod touch to look into their homes and businesses and view live video, remotely pan and tilt cameras, manually record video clips and take snapshots.

The IP cameras and built-in analytics let Total Connect monitor for specific events such as a person approaching a front door or a child returning home from school, and can alert consumers via e-mail or text messages.

End-users with multiple cameras can choose to view all cameras on a single screen or one at a time. Store owners with multiple locations or homeowners with more than one property can manage and view all locations over a secure network with a single login.

Kwikset has expanded its portfolio of Home Connect products with the introduction of the SmartCode.

This keyless, electronic lock is developed for interoperability with home automation and security systems.

The SmartCode is ZigBee- and Z-Wave certified and allows homeowners to use Web-enabled cell phones, computer browsers or home automation/security touchpanels to check lock status, arm and disarm security systems and receive text notifications when someone has entered.
