image It seems like that custom installation businesses are being attacked from all sides. There are Internet retailers selling custom products that were once in limited distribution and there are big-box retailers attempting to save their businesses by offering custom installation services.

One way installers can fight back is to offer non-traditional electronics such as furniture as part of their product portfolios. First Impressions is a Miami-based manufacturer of themed theaters and A/V furniture, and recently the nearly 40-year-old company released its CineDecoLounger chair as a stylish seating solution that installers can package into their dedicated theater and media room installations.

First Impressions offers the CineDecoLounger recliner in a choice more than 200 fire-rated high-nap velvet material colors and a full selection of leather coverings. The chair is designed to mimic the style of 1930s French Streamline Moderne furniture, and it is available with additional options that include a choice of 21 inch or 26 inch widths, configurations that include chairs, loveseats, sofas and day loungers, and different foam densities to enable homeowners to choose a seating product that is comfortable to their individual tastes.

image At one time the electronics market could be characterized by big and bulky coffin-like speakers and plain-old black box electronics components.

Today however style is just as important as circuit designs, and it's now imperative that electronics systems complement a home decor. Salamander Designs' newly announced additions to its Chameleon Collection provide electronics professionals with a choice of seven A/V furniture solutions that are engineered to complement the aesthetics of the modern American home.

In total the company has introduced four quad cabinets and three corner cabinets, and Salamander says the new products are engineered to safely support the installation of flat-panel televisions on the top of the cabinets with a variety of electronics integrated into the storage areas of the units. The quad units feature four-door designs that are designed to supplement larger TV products, and the corner units are capable of supporting smaller screen sizes, along with center-channel speakers.

image There are many cases that installers run into that require more than just a simple "hang and bang" flat-panel TV mounting job.

Sanus' newly released VMA401on-wall component shelf is a simple solution that provides homeowners an elegant way to save space by housing their A/V components, which include Blu-ray players, cable and satellite boxes, gaming systems and Apple TVs without creating an eye sore. Sanus says it engineered the product to mount directly below a mounted flat-panel television to create a seamless aesthetic that is versatile and ergonomically friendly in a variety of home environments.

The company says the shelf holds up to 15 pounds and the VMA401 features a thick-tempered glass that adds style, while providing functionality. In addition, it incorporates a cable management system the enables electronics professionals to hide cabling runs to provide their clients with a totally self-contained A/V system that resides independently within a room. Installers can also use multiple shelves in the event that a client has multiple components within their system and once it's installed, its height can be adjusted to the exact specifications of a homeowner.

image As the popularity for home theater has grown it's been surprising that the furniture industry has never really adapted to the change that's occurred within the living room that's been the result of Americans blending electronics into traditional home settings.

Spectral by Cinematech is doing its part to expedite this ongoing process by releasing new products like its Scala Series of products. The Scala series of products offers homeowners a choice of two products that incorporate electronics and other options to dock an iPhone/iPod and to mount a flat-panel television.

The Scala Series BRA1 offers homeowners a 2.1 speaker system that includes an integrated subwoofer, connections for four digital devices and two analog devices, an integrated FM tuner and a learning IR remote control. The Scala SCA1 incorporates a 2.0 audio system with three analog inputs and an IR remote control.

image The 1960s were a revolutionary period in American culture and its an era that gave the public everything from Jimi Hendrix to the civil rights movement. The period's impact has also extended into the world of fashion and style, which of course includes interior design and furniture.

Westlake, Calif.-based Fortress Seating has dipped into 1960s culture through the introduction of its SOLO Theater Chair. Tapping into the iconic John Follis and Dave Hammer SOLO lounge design that debuted during the days of peace and love, Fortress' new SOLO Theater Chair integrates that classic 60s design with modern touches to help the Theater Chair product to seamlessly blend into a multimedia/great room setting or a dedicated theater room.

Fortress Seating says the chair is designed to sit users comfortably for hours and it offers the product in a choice of materials and colors to help electronics professionals blend it into a variety of room decors.

image Excluding the minority audio enthusiast market that doesn't mind having huge speakers and massive monoblock amplifiers sitting in the middle of their living rooms, most Americans don't want unsightly electronics to dominate the aesthetics of their living spaces.

Helping homeowners to blend their electronics into their homes is the Phoenix-based company OmniMount, which has just released its Elements AT, Verona AT and Axis AT audio towers. These new products are designed to match its existing furniture product lines that house TVs and other components. The first of the three new products is the Element AT and it features a high-gloss black open architecture design with interchangeable wood accents that provide homeowners a choice of four color options: gloss black, cherry, brushed stainless and walnut. The next product is the Verona AT, which offers homeowners a semi-enclosed tower that allows users to partially conceal their A/V gear. The Verona employs curved edges and it can be placed along a wall or in a corner. OmniMount's third new equipment rack launch is the Axis AT audio tower. This unit is an enclosed product that serves users more like a traditional rack product, but it's industrial design is more at home in a residence.

Summarizing the newly released products, the company says the three new rack and storage products represent the latest industrial design trends that are currently popular in the interior design and electronics markets.

image The dedicated theater category may not be as robust as it once was, but that doesn't mean that sales opportunities don't exist. Affluent homeowners are still spending money and with products like CinemaForte's new line of SmArt Theaters and SmartLoungers, ISF- and HAA-trained custom electronics professionals now have access to a selection of turnkey home theater solutions.

Newly released, the new line of products are designed by noted acoustician Dennis Erskine and the line incorporates a choice of traditional, deco and contemporary style elements. As part of Erskine's design goals, the acoustician placed emphasis on loudspeaker, listener and acoustical placement within the pre-designed rooms, and to help optimize these points of interest Cinemaforte employs Quest Acoustical Interiors' Lens (QALS) technology.

Depending on the solution, the products will range in cost from $18,000 to $50,000 before electronics, shipping and installation fees, and Cinemaforte says each system ships within a four- to six-week window. Installation of each room is said to take a few days and installation can be done by dealers or dealers can opt for Cinemaforte to perform the installation.

image Years ago it was much easier for dealers to dismiss the importance of furniture sales as part of their A/V system solutions, but today furniture is an essential part of the system equation. Products like Sanus' Basic Series Furniture can help installers augment their flat-panel TV, two-channel audio and home theater system sales by providing an in-house solution that saves a client a trip to a furniture store.

The St. Paul, Minn.-based company recently started to ship two models from the Basic Series: the BFAV344 and BFAV550 three-shelf A/V stands. The BFAV344 features a high-gloss black lacquered finish and a curved shape, and Sanus describes the design of the BFAV550 as a "waterfall" design with hardwood front veneers that are available in a chestnut or chocolate finish.

Both stands incorporate cable management provisions, and they are engineered to support televisions ranging in size up to 56 inches and TV weights up to 125 pounds. In addition, Sanus says that installers can use the stands in tandem with the company's Foundations FMK056 Mount Kit to assemble an easy-to-implement, no-drill TV mounting solution.

image Pros in the custom and specialty electronics market hear it all the time from industry analysts and press members: they're leaving money on the table by not offering complete solutions.

One of the ways that CE Pros and specialty retailers can offer complete solutions is to offer seating that really completes their home theater installations. Formations by Christopher Vlaun is a line created for the custom and specialty electronics markets that allows these businesses to retain the full sale capabilities of a home theater system that includes furniture.

Among the products in the Formations line is the modular Avanti series, which provides homeowners with a versatile seating solution that can be configured in a number of ways to conform the usage habits and room layout of clients that want a modern-looking, comfortable seating solution. The Avanti like the other products in the Formations product line is constructed using kiln-dried hardwoods, as well as the company's unidirectional webbed suspension seating techniques, single-coil springs and high-density foam.

image Salamander Designs, Ltd. has added a specially configured subwoofer enclosure to its flagship Chameleon Collection of A/V cabinetry solutions.

The free-standing subwoofer enclosure joins a line that includes nine decorator style cabinets, each in many configurations with optional professional audio quality rack mounting. The subwoofer enclosure is available in all nine styles and complements other new accessories like a wall-mounting kit that creates the illusion a cabinet is floating above the floor.

The subwoofer enclosure is an external box designed to house an audio system’s external subwoofer. The enclosure matches its companion A/V cabinet in style, size and finish, and incorporates large rear grills to avoid interfering with rear or side-firing subs.

Like all other Chameleon products the subwoofer enclosure can be assembled and shipped from the factory within three days. The Chameleon Collection offers 19 configurations, including rack mounting and the subwoofer in nine styles. Options include bases, furniture feet and accessories.

Practical features include extruded aluminum frameworks, solid wood doors with soft-closing dampers, adjustable shelves, ventilation louvers in the bottoms of cabinet segments, and removable rear panels.

image Salamander Designs, Ltd. is adding a layer of memory foam to the cushions and backs of all its theater seat, increasing the comfort and environmental responsibility of its premium Home Theater seating collection.

Eco-friendly, soybean-based foam will continue to be used as the core for all seating. This soy foam reduces the amount of petroleum used in polyurethane foam (a core material in cushions). The new combination of foams is more comfortable, durable and eco-friendly than the combination of materials used previously.

The memory foam, similar to that used in Tempur-pedic mattresses, is much denser than conventional foam, with an open-cell structure that provides better support. As a seated person shifts his or her weight, the foam constantly and subtly readjusts itself to provide continuous support.

Company president Salvatore Carrabba says the company is committed to making environmentally friendly business decisions. “As alternatives present themselves, we make every effort to take advantage of Green opportunities in all aspects of our business.”

Salamander Designs is applying the memory foam to its entire collection of premium Home Theater seating, including the Alex, Talia and Matteo lines. The three basic styles come in 27 colors and four cover materials, including leathers that use an eco-friendly tanning process. Consumers can customize their seating selections.

image The lines between traditional A/V, custom electronics and media/great rooms have become increasingly blurred, but products like Salamander's Synergy and Chameleon lines of products are helping to neatly tie these worlds together.

The Synergy line is a modular series of products that allows installers to mix and match a variety of equipment storage options to accommodate just about any residential installation scenario.

Salamander's Chameleon collection of products offers homeowners a choice of nine different styles and four different configuration options. image With the latest generation of flat-panel televisions incorporating technologies like LED backlighting and 3D viewing options, sales of these products continue to remain strong due to the increased interest in these technologies.

With WallWizard's new XM60, consumers can enjoy the benefits of owning one of these new televisions with additional benefit of freeing up floorspace by wall mounting these sleek new TVs via the XM60.

The XM60 is designed to work with large flat-panel televisions that range from 40 inches to 60 inches, and the company says the mount utilizes a cam mechanism that allows a mounted television to swivel 90 degrees left and right or up and down.

WallWizard says the swivel and tilt options are easy to use and because of its thin profile it matches the industrial designs of today's televisions.
